The Sports Commission had recently conducted meetings with the Orlando Regional Bowling Association with respect to potentially hosting the 2014 Florida State Open Championship Tournament. This 10 week event would be staged at the Boardwalk Bowling Center in East Orlando, with approximately 7,000+ bowlers expected to participate. Another 5,000+ spectators are expected to be in attendance.
Our opportunity to impress the voting members will come next October, when the 2012 Florida State USBC Jamboree will be staged in Orlando. Approximately 250 United States Bowling Congress members from across the State of Florida will be in attendance, with activities planned for them ranging from a golf tournament to an awards banquet. As more information comes together for the Jamboree and the Florida State Open Championship Tournament, we will be sure to let you know.
In addition, the Sports Commission is currently evaluating an opportunity to potentially host the 2012 USA BMX Track Operator Seminar. The Track Operator Seminar is held annually in mid February, and consists of training seminars and meetings conducted for the staff and volunteers that run the association's BMX tracks. The event will attract more than 400 attendees from 49 states and Canada. A hotel is generally the host venue for this conference. Stay tuned! |

The Sports Commission, in partnership with Disney Sports Attractions and Orange County Convention Center, recently has been in discussions with the Amateur Athletic Union about the possibility of the AAU Girls Junior National Volleyball Championships returning to Orlando. The 2011 Girls Junior National Volleyball Championships drew over 1,300 youth volleyball teams from across the United States to our community this past June. Host venues were the ESPN Wide of World Sports Complex and the Orange County Convention Center. Based on our recent discussions, it appears that the AAU is committed to returning to our community in 2012, but more importantly, interested in signing a long term agreement to stay in Orlando. Formal agreements should be executed in the coming weeks, but this is great news for our region. Additional information on the event will be provided in future impact reports.
In other news, the Sports Commission, in partnership with Visit Orlando, recently submitted a proposal to USA Fencing to potentially host the 2012 Summer National Championships. USA Fencing is looking for a site for one of their marquee events for June/July of 2012. The proposed venue would be the Orange County Convention Center. Based on our diligence, over 8,000+ participants, coaches and spectators could be in attendance at this particular event. We recently spoke with USA Fencing and have learned that Orlando has made the final list of potential destinations, but a final decision won't be made until the end of December. Keep your fingers crossed!
