A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM BRENT |
It's starting to get a little cooler out there and the humidity is starting to drop so it's time to get back to the outdoors.
Next May the Sports Commission, along with the Mission Inn Resort and Oglethorpe University, will once again play host to a NCAA Division III Golf Championship, except this time it will be the men heading down to Lake County instead of the women. This past September, 18 of the top Division III Men's golf teams came to Mission Inn to get a sneak peak of the championship course during the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Preview. Last year's Championship winner Guilford College came in third place with Methodist University coming out on top. It was a great event and we are looking forward to having many of those collegiate golf teams back in Lake County in 2012.
Next on the tee this Fall is the 10th annual Mission Inn Collegiate Classic hosted once again by St. John's University. Division I and Division II teams from around the country will travel to Howey-In-The-Hills to compete in the annual 54-hole invitational tournament. That same weekend we will host the Florida Rugby Union for their 5th Annual All Florida Rugby Day. College and club teams will come over from across the state to compete in the two day event which will take place at the Hickory Point Soccer Complex.
And let us not forget the FHSAA Golf Finals, which will come to Lake County for the very first time at the beginning of November. Four (4) area golf courses will play host of this county wide event.
On the business development front, we spent a balance of the last month on the road meeting up with potential event organizers from across the United States. Read about our recent activity later on in this month's impact report.

IN THE PIPELINE | |
The Sports Commission recently sent representation to Colorado Springs, Colorado to network with national event organizers such as USA Diving, USA Volleyball, ASA Softball USA Rugby, USA Water Polo and USA Fencing, just to name few. Multiple national and regional event opportunities for future years are being evaluated for venues within Lake County, so stay tuned as more information will come available on each in future impact reports.

In addition, the Sports Commission will also be sending staff to the upcoming TEAMS Conference to be held in Las Vegas in October. Hosted by SPORTSTRAVEL Magazine, the conference features an expo with event organizers seeking to partner with sports commissions and sports destinations to host future sports related events and activities. We expect to meet with over 30+ national event organizers, with the goal of identifying future opportunities for our community venues. |

There are a lot of great opportunities we are currently evaluating. This past spring we had a great experience in hosting the 2011 USA Synchro Junior Nationals and we are currently looking to bringing them back in 2014, which is the first year the event would be available to return to Lake County. In addition, we are also looking into the possibility of bringing in the USA Synchro Masters Championship in 2014. Both events would be staged at the National Training Center pool.
In addition, USA Rugby has recently announced that they are going to be hosting the Collegiate Sevens National Championship in mid December. This event would consist of 24 men's teams and 16 women's team that would travel from all over the United States to compete for national bragging rights. We are currently discussing the opportunity with USA Rugby to ascertain if they would consider any of our venues in Lake County such as Hickory Point, the National Training Center and the North Lake Community Park, just to name a few. Stay tuned as we should know more about this opportunity in next month's impact report.
Finally, we are also still in talks with USA Triathlon about bringing the 2012 and 2013 USAT Junior and Youth National Championship to Lake County. A course in South Lake County would appear to make the most sense, but we are still researching the viability of hosting another triathlon in Clermont. We will keep you up to date on this and all other event opportunities as they progress. |
