And the SPORTY goes to...
A crowd of more than 350 of Central Florida's sports elite were on hand to experience the PNC Bank SPORTYS @ Full Sail University, which took place on Saturday, September 24 at Full Sail Live. Hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission, the inaugural event honored the top area high school, amateur, collegiate and professional athletes, coaches, deserving local residents and businesses throughout Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia Counties.
Ryan Lochte, one of the most decorated US swimmers in history and the 2010 World Swimmer of the Year, took home the SPORTY for Professional Athlete of the Year, beating out Dwight Howard and Yani Tseng for the award. Other SPORTY winners were: Amateur Athlete - Marvin Bracy, High School Athlete - Austin Rivers, College Athlete - Jeff Godfrey, Coach of the Year - Anthony Jones, Business of the Year - ESPN Wide World of Sports, Employee of the Year - Tom Snyder, Volunteer of the Year - Shawn Cavalieri, and Rich DeVos Community Spirit Award - Orlando Magic Youth Foundation.
During the show Glenn "Doc" Rivers, Chuck Rohe and Ricky Watters were inducted into the Central Florida Sports Hall of Fame. After the show, guests enjoyed the Ruth's Chris Steak House Overtime Party on Full Sail's back lot.
Looking ahead, the Sports Commission has a busy fall season in Orlando and Orange County. Beginning in October with the American Biking Association Disney Cup Fall Nationals and the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational Golf Tournament, November brings the FHSAA Swimming & Diving State Championships, followed in December by the FHSAA Football Finals. Keep an eye on future impact reports for all the details.
It has also been a busy month on the business development front, with lots of great opportunities on the horizon for both the City of Orlando and Orange County. Read more about our recent activity below.
Thank you for your continued support, as we continue to market Orlando and Orange County as the "Ultimate Sports Destination". |

IN THE PIPELINE | |

The Sports Commission recently sent representation to Colorado Springs, Colorado to network with national event organizers such as USA Gymnastics, USA Figure Skating, USA Karate, USA Diving, USA Volleyball and USA Fencing, just to name few. Multiple national and regional event opportunities for future years are being evaluated for venues within the City of Orlando and Orange County, so stay tuned as more information will come available on each in future impact reports.

In addition, the Sports Commission will also be sending staff to the upcoming TEAMS Conference to be held in Las Vegas in October. Hosted by SPORTSTRAVEL Magazine, the conference features an expo with event organizers seeking to partner with sports commissions and sports destinations to host future sports related events and activities. We expect to meet with over 30+ national event organizers, with the goal of identifying future opportunities for our community venues such as the Florida Citrus Bowl, Amway Center and Orange County Convention Center, just to name a few. |

WINS & LOSSES
(As of September, 2011) |
Formal Bids Submitted: 8
Total Bids Won: 4
Total Bids Lost: 2
Update on a recent bid submission. The Sports Commission, in conjunction with Visit Orlando, recently submitted a proposal to USA Fencing with regards to hosting their 2012 World Cup. This event would take place in June of 2012 and would feature fencers from 32 different countries. The Convention Center would serve as the host venue, with hotels adjacent to the Center (and down International Drive) serving as the proposed host hotels. Approximately 1,000+ room nights would be generated in the host community.
Unfortunately, we were informed last week that USA Fencing has chosen Chicago as the destination for the 2012 event. While they indicated we had an attractive bid, they ultimately decided that Chicago would be a more convenient location for a majority of the participants and fans that would be in attendance. Please know we will continue to pursue other USA Fencing events for our community.
In other news, the Sports Commission and University of Central Florida recently sent staff to Dallas to give a presentation to Conference USA with respect to hosting the 2013 or 2014 Conference USA Men's & Women's Basketball Tournament in Orlando. The event is proposed to be staged at the UCF Arena in early March, and would attract 12 men's and 12 women's teams from across the United States to our community for multiple days of competitive action. Two basketball venues, ideally located under one roof, are required to host both the Men's & Women's CUSA Tournaments concurrently. Initial estimates have the tournament generating somewhere between 3k - 5k room nights for the host community. Moreover, the tournament is scheduled to be broadcasted nationally on CBS College Sports Network. We expect to hear something from the CUSA office in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
