A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM BRENT | |
Cooler temperatures have arrived and fall will not be denied!
We are pleased to welcome Score Tournaments and their Score at the Shore Soccer Showcase to Seminole County in February of 2012! After an extensive site visit of county hotels and soccer facilities, they came away impressed and have awarded this great showcase event to TEAM SEMINOLE! Many thanks to the hotels for assisting with the fast paced site visits that all took place in one day. They came away extremely impressed with the hospitality of everyone in the county and quality of the sports venues. Great job to everyone involved in the process!
On the business development front, the Sports Commission had an active month continuing to reach out to event organizers, as well as attending several industry trade shows. Read about our recent activity below in this month's activity report.
Now that cooler weather is here, get out and enjoy some outside activities. The calendar below lists several activities for everyone to enjoy in the coming weeks. The Seminole County trail system is also a great way to enjoy a good workout in cooler temperatures and less humidity. All paved trails consist of 12' - 14' wide asphalt. Amenities on the paved trails include benches and trash receptacles. Most of the trail system follows the Florida National Scenic Trail.
As always, please do not hesitate to call should you have any questions and we look forward to partnering with TEAM SEMINOLE to generate more great sports activity in Seminole County. |

IN THE PIPELINE |
The Sports Commission recently sent representation to Colorado Springs, Colorado for Olympic Sportslink to network with national event organizers such as USA Swimming, USA Diving, USA Volleyball, USA Water Polo, USA Rugby and USA Fencing, just to name few. This conference provides the Sports Commission a one on one opportunity to network with event organizers in a more intimate setting. Multiple national and regional event opportunities for future years are being evaluated for venues within Seminole County, so stay tuned as more information will come available on each in future impact reports. In addition, the Sports Commission sent staff to the TEAMS Conference held in Las Vegas in October. Hosted by SPORTSTRAVEL Magazine, the conference features an expo with event organizers seeking to partner with sports commissions and sports destinations to host future sports related events and activities. We meet with over 30+ national event organizers, with the goal of identifying future opportunities for our community venues such as the Sylvan Lake Park, Seminole Soccer Complex, Seminole County Softball Complex and Sanlando Park, just to name a few. More details on the leads generated from this conference to be shared in future impact reports. |

In other news, the Sports Commission and Seminole County CVB recently sent in a bid to host the 2012 USA Ultimate High School Regional Championships. The event would be hosted at Sylvan Lake Park in either May or June of 2012. Approximately 350 participants and coaches would be expected to attend the High School Regional Championships, which will qualify teams for the National Championship which will be staged later in the year. We are working to secure a site visit with the event organizer at the end of October which would be beneficial with respect to the overall selection process. |

COMMUNITY PROFILE | |
Track champion Jenny Barringer Simpson's roots extend to Central Florida
The girl who would become a world track and field champion could not breathe.
Jenny Barringer was 6 months old and living in Iowa when the problem began. Her parents took her to a pediatric specialist, who tested Jenny for cystic fibrosis. That came back negative.
Her parents anxiously seeking an explanation for their second child's respiratory problems, Jenny eventually was diagnosed with infantile asthma.
"They told us she would outgrow it by the time she was 2, and she did,'' said Barringer's mother, Janet, a nurse. "If things had turned out differently, that would have changed our lives and hers considerably.''
Given a different diagnosis, Jenny Barringer Simpson would not have been standing triumphantly, an American flag draped around her back, after winning the 1,500 meters at the IAAF world track and field championships last month in Daegu, Korea. Nor would she have set the American record in the steeplechase at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
And Barringer Simpson would not have become a staple on the Central Florida youth track scene, first at Partin Elementary School, then at Jackson Heights and Lawton Chiles middle schools and finally earning eight state titles at Oviedo High.
