A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

We hope this month's activity letter finds you well, as the Central Florida Sports Commission continues its extensive work to bring new and exciting sports related events and activities to Osceola County.

As the summer ends and the new school year begins, the Sports Commission continued its business development efforts in the month of August by researching and prospecting new events for Osceola County venues and hotels. The Sports Commission looked into several conventions/conferences that would provide the opportunity to bring many key event organizers to the area. It would give them a first-hand look at Osceola County and the many facilities and hotels available. The conferences we researched, along with the Kissimmee Convention & Visitors Bureau, were the US Sports Congress, the National Association of Sports Commissions Sports Event Symposium, Sports Lawyers Association Annual Conference and the IMG Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

The first annual PNC Bank SPORTYS @ Full Sail University will be held at Full Sail Live on September 24th at 7:00 pm.  The SPORTYS honors top area high school, amateur, collegiate, and professional athletes, coaches, deserving local residents and businesses throughout Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia counties.  In fact, Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports has been nominated for the Business of the Year. As one of the single greatest destinations for youth amateur sports, the ESPN Wide World of Sports drives substantial sports tourism impact for Osceola County on an annual basis. For more information and to purchase your tickets check out the featured article section on the left.

Also, the Sports Commission continued prospecting new events for Osceola County. Building on the success of the Champions MudBash in June, the Sports Commission and Kissimmee Convention & Visitors Bureau conducted a site visit with Tough Mudder to possibly bring this fast growing sport (endurance racing) to the area in 2012. Along with Tough Mudder, we have been in discussions with USA Fencing, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and B.A.S.S. Read more about our recent activity in this month's impact report.

Thank you for your continued support as we continue to market Osceola County as the "Amateur Sports Capital."

Best Regards,

ECONOMIC IMPACT
IN THE PIPELINEI

On the business development front, the Sports Commission and Kissimmee Convention & Visitors Bureau recently submitted a bid to host the 2012 US Sports Congress at the Omni Resort at ChampionsGate. This annual conference, which would take place in December of 2012, would bring together Sports Commissions and event organizers from across the United States to Osceola County to discuss the state of the amateur sports industry. Some of the event organizers who have attended in previous years are USA Volleyball, USA Badminton, USA Weightlifting, USA Rugby, Amateur Athletic Union, USA Gymnastics, USA Archery, USA Lacrosse, NAIA, NCAA, PGA, and USA Football to name a few. Hosting this conference would provide us the opportunity to bring multiple event organizers to Osceola County with the goal of showcasing our existing sports venues, along those facilities coming online in future years. Check back in future impact reports to see if we were awarded the event!

The two other conferences we prospected, the Sports Lawyers Association Annual Conference and the IMG Intercollegiate Athletics Forum, have their conferences booked at other locations until 2016. Although we will not be able to bid on these anytime soon, we will make a note and try the next time they are up for bid!

As mentioned above, the Sports Commission and Kissimmee Convention & Visitors Bureau conducted a site visit with Tough Mudder in Osceola County. Tough Mudder is a 12-mile obstacle course, designed by British Special Forces, to test all around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie. All ages participate in these types of events, with thousands of participants/spectators usually in attendance. We showed them several properties in Osceola County, and look forward to their follow-up visit in December. We should know more details later this year on whether Tough Mudder will host an event in Osceola County.

In addition, we recently received a request for proposal from USA Fencing with regards to hosting their 2012 World Cup. This event would take place in June of 2012 and would feature Fencers from 32 different countries. Approximately 1,000+ room nights would be generated in the host community. Based on our diligence, none of our hotels and sports venues could meet their hosting parameters.

Next, the Sports Commission and Kissimmee Convention & Visitors Bureau researched a proposal from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regarding their 2013 & 2014 Men's and Women's Conference Basketball Championships. The MEAC Basketball Tournament is held annually in early March, and brings collegiate basketball teams from across the east coast together for the opportunity to crown a men's & women's conference basketball champions. Bethune Cookman, Florida A&M and Hampton are few of the schools that are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. After our diligence, it was determined that we could not host the event based on the MEAC's hosting parameters. The biggest factor was the financial commitment required to host the event.

Finally, the Sports Commission was recently in touch with B.A.S.S. with respect to possibly hosting one of their 2012 Collegiate fishing tournaments. B.A.S.S. continually enjoys coming to Osceola County, not only because of the warm welcome and service they receive, but also because the Lake Toho is one of the top five bass fisheries in the world. This event, encompassing two days plus additional pre-fishing days, could feature up to 600 collegiate anglers from across the United States. The event would be staged on Lake Toho, with the Kissimmee Lakefront Park serving as the launch and weigh in facility. We hope to know more details with respect to this opportunity in next month's impact report.

Great news! The Sports Commission recently learned that the Champions MudBash will return to Osceola County in March of 2012. Since their inaugural event this past June, which brought over 5,000 participants and spectators and over $300,000.00 in economic impact for Osceola County, we have been actively searching for a new site to host this event in 2012. After several site visits with various private and public land owners, the Champions MudBash has decided to host their event in Harmony. With the next year's start/finish area located adjacent to the future location of the Harmony Sports Complex, we feel this will be an excellent precursor to what we hope will be many more events hosted in Harmony in the future!

In other news, the Sports Commission, in conjunction with the Kissimmee Convention & Visitors Bureau, researched the possibility of potentially hosting the National Association of Sports Commissions Sports Event Symposium to Osceola County in 2014 or 2015. This annual conference brings together sports commission, convention & visitors bureaus and event organizers for networking and educational purposes. The conference generates approximately 2000 + hotel room nights for the host community. Although this would have been a fantastic event to bid on because of the number, and level, of event organizers that attend, there was not any availability at one of the larger "conference" hotels in Osceola County.   We will look at this opportunity again for 2016 and 2017.
