A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

September brings back to school days, football season, and other fall sports!

ECNL planning is in full swing and the hotels are filling up fast with teams booking for the girls' soccer showcase event in December. In fact, Seminole County hotels are already close to being sold out of their rooms! The event has grown tremendously in just one year's time and is proving to be a very popular event to visit by college coaches, as close to 200 of them will be in attendance.

The first annual PNC Bank SPORTYS @ Full Sail University will be held at Full Sail Live on September 24th at 7:00 pm. The SPORTYS honors top area high school, amateur, collegiate, and professional athletes, coaches, deserving local residents and businesses throughout Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia counties. Moreover, two Seminole County athletes have been nominated for awards. Maite Moscoso, a Junior at Lake Brantley High School is the USA Track & Field Junior Champion in the 10K Race Walk, and has been nominated for Amateur Athlete of the Year. Also nominated for the same award, is the Oviedo 12-U Softball Team who won the Babe Ruth World Series this past summer. In addition, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, with local headquarters in Lake Mary, have been nominated for Business of the Year. IN THE PIPELINE Pipe

The Sports Commission, in partnership with the Seminole County CVB, recently conducted a three (3) day site visit with Score at the Shore Soccer.  Score at the Shore conducts youth (boys and girls) soccer tournaments around the United States and is interested in bringing one or more tournaments to Seminole County in 2012.   Based on the size and scope of the tournament being contemplated for Seminole County, the venues that would be considered would include Sylvan Lake Park, Seminole Soccer Club and Central Winds Park, among others.   Multiple dates are being considered in 2012, but it is too early to determine which event and month are best fits for Seminole County.   The events being contemplated for Seminole County have the potential to generate 5,000+ room nights for the region.

Based on the positive feedback received from Score at the Shore, we plan to submit a proposal in the coming days relative to potentially hosting one of their national events in 2012.  We thank all of our hotel and venue partners for their participation in the recent site visit, and hope to be able to share good news with you in next month's impact report.

In other news, the Sports Commission and Seminole County CVB recently met with the UCF Ultimate Frisbee Club, along with the Orlando Frisbee Club, about establishing an event presence in the county.  During our research, we have learned that USA Ultimate Frisbee has several regional and national events currently up for bid for future years.  With the support of each club, we hope to be able to either create and/or bid on some of these events for venues in Seminole County.  The preferred venues, based on our conversations with the local clubs, would be either Sylvan Lake Park or Seminole Soccer Complex.  More meetings are planned in the future with each club, but it is our goal to stage one or more Frisbee events in Seminole County in 2012 and beyond.   Stay tuned!

USSSA Florida baseball is bringing a presence back to the Seminole County Softball Complex starting in September of 2012. A recent meeting at the complex resulted in TEAM SEMINOLE coming together and agreeing in principal with USSSA on two weekend dates to host tournaments next year. The size and scope of each event is still being worked out.

The hopes are the two (2) tournaments will draw youth baseball teams from across the State of Florida to Altamonte Springs, with the goal of adding additional events to the sports calendar in Seminole County for 2012 and beyond. USSSA hosts numerous tournaments throughout the State of Florida during the year and increasing their presence in our community can only help to position Seminole County as a prime player in the youth baseball scene. Stay tuned for more information on future USSSA Florida baseball events to be staged in Seminole County.

Local Baseball Star Drafted, Opts To Help Build UCF Baseball Program

Ryan Meyer, a freshman pitcher from Oviedo High School sees the early success that the UCF football program is experiencing, and is excited about playing a role in the success of another UCF program.

"That gets me real pumped, you see how they progressed the last couple years with all their recruits," Meyer said. "All the sports [at UCF] are improving and getting more publicity."

And with the former-Lions standout having been so close to UCF and able to watch the program's recent growth surge under head coach Terry Rooney, Meyer says he's aware and excited of what he's getting into. Meyer was part of another solid signing class for the Knights, a string of which started when Rooney got to campus. For his part, Rooney is as excited about this class as any of those before.
