  KEEP UP WITH US!

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

We hope you had a great summer!

As we embark on the fall and the busy sports season ahead, we must first reflect on the great summer we had. The fur was flying at the Mascot Games as nearly 30 mascots entertained more than 15,000 thousand fans at three great shows, one at Stetson University and two shows at the Amway Center. Click HERE to watch mascot craziness from the event.

In September, Dwight Howard, Ryan Lochte and Austin Rivers top the list of impressive SPORTY nominees, and Doc Rivers, Chuck Rohe and Ricky Watters will be inducted into the Central Florida Sports Hall of Fame during the PNC Bank SPORTYS @ Full Sail University. Read below for more info and how to purchase your tickets.

The beginning of fall means two things: heat and football are right around the corner! High School football practice began August 8th for most of the Central Florida High Schools, and this year brings a new look as the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) added two new classes. There should be some pretty exciting games this year with Week 1 games of the regular season starting this Friday. Let's support all of Central Florida's High Schools at the games this fall. Click HERE for schedule information. Don't forget that all roads lead to Orlando, as the Citrus Bowl will once again host the FHSAA Football Finals in December.

Football isn't the only sport getting attention right now. When 2011 began, very few Central Floridians even knew that a professional soccer franchise was setting up its lair in Orlando. Now, nine months later, the Orlando City Lions are creating quite a roar. In just its inaugural season, the Lions will host the USL Pro Division Championship, Saturday night at the Citrus Bowl. Kickoff is at 7pm for this nationally-televised game. If you've been to a game, you understand the lure of contagious fan-frenzy atmosphere. If you haven't yet, don't miss this opportunity to experience the game of the year!

This is a busy time here at the Sports Commission as we gear up for our fall events. Check out our latest information below in the Community Sports Report, and have a safe Labor Day Holiday!

LEESBURG LIGHTS IT UP

The Sports Commission would like to congratulate the Leesburg Lightning on a record setting season in the Florida Collegiate Summer League. The Lightning set a FCSL record of 29 regular seasons win but unfortunately was not able to carry that success into the post season. The lightning faced off in the first round against the Sanford Rats at Pat Thomas Stadium. The teams split the first two games, each winning by only one run. Unfortunately, in the third game the Rats came out hot and beat the Lightning 9 - 2, sending them to the Championship Game at Tropicana Field. Despite the outcome, the Lightning put on a great season and look to continue their success into next season.

NEW BUSINESS IN OSCEOLAosc

The Sports Commission has recently been in discussions with the University of Louisville and the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) in regards to creating a collegiate golf invitational in Osceola County. This is a very exciting opportunity as it would be a "self-created" annual event bringing in some of the NCAA's top men's and/or women's golf teams to the county year after year. Approximately 10 - 20 teams from across the United States would travel to Osceola County for four (4) days, as the tournament would encompass a practice round and three (3) days of competition. Check back at future impact reports to see how this potential event progresses.

SOFTBALL IN SEMINOLEsemi

The Sports Commission, Seminole County CVB and Seminole County Parks & Recreation Department recently submitted a bid to host the 18U ASA Gold Girls Softball Championships for the first week of August of 2013. If awarded, this would attract approximately 70 teams from across the United States to Seminole County for an average of 5 days, with this national showcase event being staged at the Seminole County Softball Complex and Merrill Park. Based on our diligence, the 18U Gold would generate approximately 2,500 room nights for Seminole County. Stay tuned to see if we are awarded the bid, as a decision should come this fall.
