A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

The last full month of summer is upon us and it has been an eventful summer. With youth conferences, the Coke Zero 400, Wrestling National Championships, and much more, Volusia County has been going full speed all summer long with no sign of slowing down.

The Central Florida Sports Commission has also been busy with two events in Volusia County in July. The Union Printers International Baseball Tournament was held at various baseball fields across the county. Games took place at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex and Embry-Riddle throughout the week and the top two teams battled it out in the Championship Game held at Jackie Robinson Stadium.   Jacksonville was the only in-state team and the Champions of the tournament!

The 19th Annual Celebrity Mascot Games also took place in the month of July at Stetson University. The Edmunds Center was filled with over 1,400 children, cheering on mascots from the MLB, NFL, NHL, and NCAA. The proceeds from the show benefit New Hope for Kids, a program that helps Central Florida children in need. Since the first Mascot Games in 1992, this event has raised nearly $300,000 for New Hope and this year was one of the most successful years to date.

The Florida Tennis Center was also very busy in the month of July, as the USTA hosted four events. The Regional League Championship (Northeast), the Regional League Championship (Central), and two sections of the Junior Team Tennis Summer Championships were all held in Daytona Beach. All together these tournaments brought in over 1,000 tennis players. For more information please visit the USTA website.

Have a great August!

Best Regards,
Sam Stark

IN THE PIPELINEPipeline

On the business development front, is in discussions with several national organizations with respect to hosting their national events and meetings in Daytona Beach. USA Gymnastics is one of those groups and they have several national events open for bid in 2014 and beyond. The Boys and Girls Junior Olympic National Championships, along with several other grass roots events, are under consideration for the Ocean Center.

Also, the Sports Commission recently received an RFP to potentially host the 2012 US Sports Congress. The Sports Congress is an annual meeting where sports commissions and event organizers come together to network and discuss the state of the sports events industry. This annual meeting would generate approximately 300 - 400 room nights, and would be staged in early December at one of our area hotels. We hope to be able to submit a proposal by their deadline of September 1st. Stay tuned.

Lastly, the Sports Commission is in discussions with the University of Florida about hosting one of their regular season women's basketball games at the Ocean Center.   The game would be staged on December 2nd at the Ocean Center, with Florida playing against Rutgers University. There would be an additional high school showcase game before Florida's game. We are still working through the details associated with this opportunity and hope to provide more information in next month's impact report.

As mentioned in last month's impact report, the Sports Commission worked in partnership with the Daytona Beach Area CVB and Ocean Center to place a bid to host the USA Fencing World Cup in June of 2012.  We have recently learned that USA Fencing has officially announced that the event will be going to Drew University, which is located in New Jersey.  The primary reason for the decision was ease of travel for a majority of the expected participants.  While disappointing, we look forward to pursuing more international and national fencing events for our venues in Volusia County.

In addition, the Sports Commission had been working closely with the Daytona Beach Area CVB and Ocean Center to potentially bring the World Rope Skipping Championship to Daytona in July of 2012. Stretched out over eight (8) days, this weeklong event would generate 1,500+ room nights. Unfortunately, due to a conflict at the Ocean Center, we were not able to forward an official proposal.  While very interested in Daytona Beach, event organizers eventually ended up choosing the University of South Florida.  We plan to talk with USA Jump Rope about the possibility of hosting some of their regional and/or national events, so stay tuned!
