A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

July brings the warmest temperatures of the year, plenty of sunshine, and a record high number of Leatherback turtles to Volusia County. While slow and steady may work for the turtles, the fast and furious prevailed at the Coke Zero 400, lighting up the track and the skies this Independence Day holiday weekend.

The Sports Commission revved up the engines last month alongside the CVB with USA Wrestling Cadets National Dual Championships. The tournament was held at the Ocean Center June 14-18 and featured the top teams from all across the Nation. The 28 teams battled for the eight national team plaques in both Greco-roman and freestyle wrestling. Minnesota took home the coveted First Place plaque after defeating #1 ranked Pennsylvania.

Our friends at the Florida Tennis Center hosted the USTA Florida  Junior State Closed with 384 junior tennis participants from across the state (age groups 14-under, 16-under, 18-under) and their families and coaches. Approximately 15 college coaches from all over the country attended the event in order to scout and recruit future prospects. The Florida Tennis Center will continue to heat things up in the month of July with four more Championship Tournaments. For more information please visit the USTA website.

Your Sports Commission is prepared to host the family event of the summer at Stetson University. The 19th annual Celebrity Mascot Games arrive in Deland on Thursday, July 28th at 12:30 p.m. The event is open to the public and more than a thousand Volusia County youth campers will be in attendance for the two-hour show. Thirty college and pro sports mascots will compete in fun and wacky games, including an inflatable joust, obstacle course and musical chairs. Invitations have already been sent to attend a VIP function at our Orlando show (July 30) , but we hope you will also join us at the Stetson show on July 28th.

Have a great July!

Sam Stark

The Sports Commission recently sent staff to attend the 2011  NACDA Convention (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) held at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando from June 15 - 17.   This conference brings together collegiate athletic directors and other administrative staff & coaches from across the United States for educational and networking seminars and meetings. This convention provided the Sports Commission the opportunity to showcase venues and hotels located throughout Volusia County for future event, meeting and convention opportunities. A short list of attendees we visited with include representatives from Georgia Tech Athletics Association, Samford University, Grand Valley State University, Norfolk University and University of Hawaii, just to name a few.

Also, the Sports Commission has been working hard to get more youth baseball events into Volusia County for 2012 and beyond. That said, we recently met with staff from Florida United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) about bringing some USSSA youth (all ages) baseball events into Ormond Beach, New Smyrna Beach and the City of Deland, just to name a few. Their statewide office is located in Kissimmee, Florida which allowed us to spend some quality time with staff discussing the options that exist in Volusia County.   A site visit to some of the proposed sports venues is in the works, so stay tuned.

The Sports Commission, in partnership with the Daytona Beach Area  CVB and the Ocean Center, worked together in early June to place a bid to USA Fencing for the opportunity to host the 2012 USA Fencing World Cup. The event would be staged in mid June and attract the top fencers within the United States, along with 32+ countries, to Daytona Beach for multiple days. It is expected that the World Cup would generate approximately 1,000 + room nights for Volusia County.

Early last week the Sports Commission learned that USA Fencing had elected to begin negotiations with another location to host the Fencing World Cup. Should those negotiations fall through, Daytona Beach would have the opportunity to step in to potentially host the event. We should have a final decision from USA Fencing by next month's impact report.

On the heels of what appears to be a successful USA Cadet Duals Meet in June, USA Wrestling and Florida Amateur Wrestling Association have asked the Sports Commission to look to see if additional dates are available at the Ocean Center next June for a High School Age Boys National Meet. Details are still very preliminary, but the proposed created event would be held after the conclusion of the 2012 Cadet Duals Meet, which is scheduled to return to Daytona Beach next year.   More detailed information on this opportunity should be available in the next month or so.

COMMUNITY PROFILECP

On June 13th, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of  Athletics announced the winners of the 2010-2011 Under Armour Athletics Directors of the Year. Among the 28 winners is Stetson University's own Jeff Altier, for the Division I Southeast Region. According to the NACDA Executive director Mike Cleary, the Athletic Director of the Year Award is essential because it highlights the efforts of Athletic Directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to campuses and their surrounding communities.

Altier has definitely shown a true commitment to Stetson and the community of Deland. He has been in the Athletic Department for 26 years and is now in his 14th year as Stetson's Director of Athletics. In those years, he is noted for his active participation in the NCAA governance structure, his outstanding fundraising, and his leadership. Stetson President Wendy B. Libby had this to say about Altier's efforts:

"From the moment I joined Stetson University, I was impressed with Jeff Altier's experience with and depth of understanding of the collegiate sports world. He believes that Stetson's athletics should always be about the scholar-athlete. That's why we are able to attract and graduate great students and great athletes. I am so proud to see him getting this outstanding recognition." Congratulations Jeff Altier on receiving this tremendous honor.
