A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM | |
The beginning of our rainy summer season couldn't wash out the Veterans Cup first experience in Seminole County!
The 14th annual USASA National Veterans Cup was hosted July 5-10 at the Seminole Soccer Complex and Sylvan Lake Park for the very first time. Over 60 men's and women's soccer teams from all over the country traveled to Seminole County to compete for national championship bragging rights in their respective age divisions. Age divisions in the Veterans Cup ranged from 30-70 years old!
Opening ceremonies were held July 5th, followed by 4 days of pool play and then championship matches on Sunday July 10th. Squeezed in the middle of the completion was a team celebration, held on Friday July 8th at Route 46 Entertainment District, where all the teams gathered for a fun night of food, drink, dancing, and networking. We hope to have the opportunity to host the event again in Seminole County in 2013, as the Veterans Cup will travel to the west coast next year. We would like to thank all of our local partners for their assistance in hosting the USASA National Veterans Cup. Click HERE for video footage from the event.
In June, the Sports Commission, Seminole County CVB and Seminole County Parks & Recreation Department co-hosted the Florida Amateur Softball Association State Girls Fast Pitch Tournament which drew almost 90 teams! Multiple venues located throughout Seminole County were utilized to accommodate the event. The tournament originally was expected to attract 60-70 teams from across the State of Florida, but team entries exploded over the last couple days of registration. We hope the great experience had by all will entice this tournament to return next year and bring with it many more ASA softball events. Read more about our ongoing dialogue with the Amateur Softball Association later on in this month's impact report.
As always, please do not hesitate to call should you have any questions and we look forward to partnering with TEAM SEMINOLE to generate more great sports activity in Seminole County. |

IN THE PIPELINE |
The Sports Commission, in partnership with the Seminole County Convention & Visitors Bureau, recently attended the 2011 NACDA Convention (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) held at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando from June 15 - 17. This conference brings together collegiate athletic directors and other administrative staff & coaches from across the United States for educational and networking seminars and meetings. This convention provided the Sports Commission and Seminole County Convention & Visitors Bureau the opportunity to showcase venues and hotels located throughout Seminole County for future event, meeting and convention opportunities. A short list of attendees we visited with include representatives from Georgia Tech Athletics Association, Samford University, Grand Valley State University, Norfolk University and University of Hawaii, just to name a few. As mentioned above, the Sports Commission and Seminole County CVB have already initiated discussions with Florida Amateur Softball Association with respect to hosting the 2012 and 2013 State Girls Fast Pitch Tournament in Seminole County. So far, all indications point to a potential return so keep your fingers crossed! In addition, we are also in the process of discussing with the state office which national ASA events might be good fits for Seminole County. Several national slow and fast pitch tournaments are up for bid in 2013, so we hope to be able to secure one or more for our venues within Seminole County. Bids are due to the national office by August 1st. |

The Sports Commission is sorry to share the news that Seminole County was not selected to host the 2012 NCAA Division II Spring Championships Festival. We received notice from the NCAA in the last month that while we were a finalist, they had narrowed down their list to a final two locations. The Spring Championships Festival consists of national championships (running concurrently) for the following sports: Men's Golf, Women's Golf, Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis, Women's Softball and Women's Lacrosse. Multiple venues and hotels would have been utilized in the hosting of Championships Festival. You might recall we were the first host of the Championships Festival back in 2004 in Seminole County. While the NCAA wouldn't be very specific on why we weren't awarded the Festival, distance between competition venues seemed to be one of their primary concerns.
Nonetheless, we are proud of our efforts and plan to bid on future NCAA Championships for Seminole County. We are confident that TEAM SEMINOLE will again have the opportunity to welcome the NCAA to our community. |
