 A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

Amway Center is tops!

In ESPN The Magazine's 9th annual Ultimate Standings, the Amway  Center was ranked #1 in the NBA for stadium experience. The Amway Center also ranked 5th for overall stadium experience among all professional teams, behind only the Green Bay Packers, San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins and Pittsburgh Penguins. Click HERE to read the complete article.

Let's hope that 30 mascots from across the country don't destroy the Amway Center and jeopardize next year's rankings. Come see zany antics for yourself at the 19th Annual Celebrity Mascot Games, July 30th at the Amway Center. Check out the featured article and www.mascotgames.org for more info. See you there!

There is an English flair in the air as Orlando City Soccer  takes on one of the English Premier League's more prominent clubs. Newcastle United takes on the Lions on at the Citrus Bowl Saturday, July 23rd. If another type of football is more your style, the Orlando Predators  are making their stretch run for the playoffs. The Preds take on New Orleans in the final regular season home game July 23rd.

At the end of July, the City of Orlando welcomes the 21st Metropolitan Junior Baseball League's (MJBL) Inner City Classic for the first time. Approximately 70 youth baseball teams from throughout the United States are expected to compete in the championship to take place July 27-31 at venues located throughout Orlando.  The MJBL's mission is to provide a platform for primarily socially and economically disadvantaged youth to realize their self worth through educational, athletic and cultural enrichment programs designed by individuals who strive to connect these youth to the legacies of African American life, achievements, and institutions.

Thank you for your continued support, as we continue to market Orlando and Orange County as the "Ultimate Sports Destination".

The Sports Commission, in partnership with Visit Orlando, recently  attended the 2011 NACDA Convention (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) held at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando from June 15 - 17.   This conference brings together collegiate athletic directors and other administrative staff & coaches from across the United States for educational and networking seminars and meetings. This convention provided the Sports Commission the opportunity to showcase venues and hotels located throughout Orlando/Orange County for future event, meeting and convention opportunities. A short list of attendees we visited with include representatives from Georgia Tech Athletics Association, Samford University, Grand Valley State University, Norfolk University and University of Hawaii, just to name a few.

In addition, we have been working in pursuit several national sports meetings/conventions that would take place in one of our hotels or resorts. Two in particular, the 2013 National Sports Forum and 2012 Sports Marketing Association, appear close to committing to coming to Orlando in their respective years. Each would bring professionals from both the amateur and professional sports world to our community for multiple days of meetings. More importantly, each conference will provide the Sports Commission and Visit Orlando the opportunity to showcase our area venues such as the Amway Center and Orange County Convention Center for future event, meeting and convention opportunities.

On the heels of the disappointed news in last month's impact report regarding the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships, the Sports Commission has already begun discussions with USA Gymnastics with respect to potentially hosting the Visa National Championship at the Amway Center and Orange County Convention Center in August of 2013.   The Visa Championships is a four day competition involving the top gymnasts in the United States.  This event will host junior and senior level athletes in Men's and Women's Artistic Gymnastics and Rhythmic Gymnastics.  All participating athletes are vying for a berth on their respective National Teams to represent the United States in national and international competitions.  There will be approximately 480 athletes, coaches, judges and staff coming from around the country to participate, along with spectators from across the United States.

In conjunction with the Visa Championships USA Gymnastics will hold an annual National Congress and Trade Show.  Upwards of 2000 gymnastics professionals from around the country, come together annually for a three day educational conference and trade show.  In all, the Visa Championships would generate approximately 5,000 room nights for the region, while showcasing our community within the live telecast on NBC.  Stay tuned, as more information on this exciting opportunity will be provided in future impact reports.
