For the 19th consecutive year, the Celebrity Mascot Games will bring mascots from the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB and NCAA to the new Amway Center for two exciting shows. This year's event will be on July 29th and 30th.  Stuff, Knightro, Albert and 27 of their furry friends will battle in a series of wacky games to determine the ultimate champions of the mascot world.

Tickets are only $10 for general admission and $16 for a reserved seat. For special ticket offers and more information visit www.mascotgames.org. Click HERE and you can follow all of the craziness on our facebook page.

Proceeds from the Celebrity Mascot Games benefit New Hope for Kids, an Orlando based not-for-profit organization. New Hope for Kids grants wishes to children under the age of 18 who are suffering from life-threatening illness and provides grief support for children who have lost a family member. In addition, since the first Mascot Games in 1992, this event raised nearly $300,000 for New Hope for Kids.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

Our spring season has come to a close and it ended with some great Championship action.  For the second year in a row the Mission Inn Resort & Club was host to the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship.  The tournament consisted of a 19 team field, including the 13-time champions Methodist Monarchs.  The Monarchs came out strong, finishing the third round with a 12 stroke lead.  Unfortunately the final round had to be canceled due to heavy rain and lightning, so Methodist was awarded the win with the 54-hole lead.  At the time of the rain delay Methodist Senior Paige Caldwell was tied for the lead with Centre College's Emily Bachert and since Caldwell was in the lead at the end of 54 holes she came out on top and received medalist honors.  We're hoping to have the Division III Women back again soon, possibly even becoming the permanent host of the Championship sometime in the next few years.

At the same time as the Division III Golf Championship, the National Training Center was playing host to the FHSAA Softball Championship for the second consecutive year.  The top softball teams from all over the state converged on Clermont to crown state champions in class 1A - 6A.  Clermont's own East Ridge high school made it to the Regional Finals but unfortunately did not make the State finals losing 3- 2 to Sarasota High School.  After a week of great competition the Finals Champions were Palm Beach Gardens (6A), Niceville (5A), Eau Gallie (4A), Gulliver Prepatory (3A), American Heritage School of Boca/Delray (2A), and Canterbury School of Florida (1A).  We are currently finalizing our contracts with the FHSAA to bring the Softball Finals back to the National Training Center for 2012 and 2013.

The summer months will be filled with extensive business development work and planning our fall events that include the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic, the FHSAA Golf Finals and a created event, the NCAA Men's Division III Golf Preview.  Read more about this new initiative, among others, below in this month's impact report.

IIN THE PIPELINE

On the business development front, the Sports Commission recently conducted meetings at the Sports Commission office with ISOL Events with respect to developing a long term event partnership   ISOL Events currently is working to provide venue and hotel assistance for several national event organizations, those being USA Volleyball, USA Team Handball, USA Fencing and USA Triathlon.   Other potential event partners they are currently courting including USA Archery, Ultimate Frisbee and National Softball Association, just to name  a few. During our meetings, we were able to review our inventory of hotel and venue options that reside in Lake County.  Our discussions are still very preliminary, but we hope that they will lead to a long term partnership that finds us hosting multiple sports events and/or meetings on annualized basis.

In addition, the Sports Commission will be attending the 2011 NACDA Convention (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) which will be held at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando in June.   This conference brings together collegiate athletic directors and other administrative staff & coaches from across the United States for educational and networking seminars and meetings.  This convention will provide the Sports Commission the opportunity to showcase Lake County venues for future event and team training opportunities.

As mentioned above, the Sports Commission, in partnership with Oglethorpe University, is proud to announce that we will be co-hosting the NCAA Men's Division II Men's Golf Preview this coming fall at the Mission Inn Resort.  15 collegiate men's teams from across the United States are expected to compete in the event, with many of the same teams expected to travel back to Lake County next May when we host the NCAA Men's Division III Men's Golf Championship.  This fall's event will give these teams an advance look at Mission Inn's two (2) championships courses, both of which will be utilized to accommodate the 40 teams that will be in attendance at the National Championships.

 COMMUNITY PROFILE
CP

Founded in 2004, the Lake County Police Activities League is an independent non-profit corporation sponsored by the Lake County Sheriff's Office that is committed to "Cops Helping Kids". Their goal is to provide a youth crime prevention program that relies on educational, athletic and other recreational activities to cement a bond between police officers and the youth in our community. It is based on the conviction that young people, if they are reached early enough, can develop strong, positive attitudes towards police officers and the law.

Under the guidance of Sheriff Gary Boarders, Cpl. Thomas Brown and Sgt. Steve Stevenson, the Lake County PAL program has reached new heights in recent years. Their bicycle program, headed by Lou Rossi, has become one of the best youth cycling programs in the state. The biggest and brightest success story out of the program in recent years has to be the PAL Summer Games that was hosted in Lake County for the first time in the summer of 2009. The event was created from scratch by those involved in Lake County PAL, and is now an annual tradition that brings PAL athletes from several sports to the county each summer. This year's event will feature a bicycle event, martial arts tournament and a soccer tournament, all staged at several venues throughout Lake County.
