A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

Tennis anyone?!

April was a busy month for Seminole County! The Sunshine State Conference Tennis Championships were held at Sanlando Park and the FHSAA Tennis Finals at Sanlando Park, Red Bug Lake Park, Sylvan Lake Park and Lake Brantley High School. After lots of competition, champions were crowned and another successful month of sports in the county complete!

More tennis was played recently with the NCAA Division II Men's & Women's National Championships being held at Sanlando Park May 11-14. The best collegiate tennis teams from around the country competed for a national title.  This was truly a community partnership as we continue to work with Team Seminole to provide a first-class event for the athletes, coaches and spectators.  The NCAA raved about the staff at the park as well as how great the facility looked in preparation for the event.

After some fierce competition and weather delays, the NCAA Tennis Championships went about as well as it possibly could.  On the men's side Valdosta State University, with the support of a large fan base in attendance, took down Barry University for the National Championship.  On the women's side, it took 2 days to play the matches due to rain, and the planned Sunday rain rainout date was in use as Barry took down Lynn University in an exciting comeback to win the Championship.

As always, please do not hesitate to call should you have any questions and we look forward to partnering with TEAM SEMINOLE to generate more great sports activity in Seminole County.

Best Regards,
Sam Stark

IN THE PIPELINE

The Sports Commission, in conjunction with the Seminole CVB, recently sent staff to the 2011 National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Sports Event Symposium in Greensboro, North Carolina on April 11 - 15.  This annual conference provides a great opportunity for the Sports Commission and Seminole County CVB to network with multiple event organizers and identify new event opportunities for hotels and sports venues within Seminole County.  A short list of event organizers that we met with include the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), Fishers of Men Outdoors, Elite Tournaments, Senior Softball and Amateur Softball Association, just to name a few.  Events would be targeted for the Sylvan Lake Park, Seminole Soccer Complex, Seminole County Softball Complex and other area venues within our community.  Stay tuned for future updates on each opportunity.

In addition, the CFSC and SCCVB have once again initiated talks with Elite Soccer Tournaments about bringing in a large tournament late this year or sometime next spring to the Seminole Soccer Complex and Sylvan Lake Park.  The event would be centered on both boys and girls (youth) of all ages.  We plan to host a site visit with staff from Elite Soccer Tournaments within the next few weeks to tour our venues and hotels.  Having hosted the ECNL Girls Showcase in 2010 has generated wonderful attention within the soccer community for our area venues, and we hope to capitalize on this positive momentum as we look to place more soccer events within Seminole County.

The Sports Commission and Seminole County CVB have recently submitted a proposal to the FHSAA for the potential return of the 1A/2A & 3A/4A Boys & Girls Tennis Final to Seminole County.  The event is currently up for bid for 2012 and 2013, with an option for 2014.  Seminole County has hosted all divisions for the last four (4) years, so retaining this piece of business is a high priority.   The event would be staged in mid to late April at Sanlando Park, Sylvan Lake Park, Red Bug Park and Lake Brantley High School and would bring in the top boys & girls high school teams to Seminole County over the course of five (5) days.   The FHSAA has indicated they will make an announcement by August 1st of this year, so keep your fingers crossed.
