A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

Spring started off with a SPLASH, as the Sports Commission, in partnership with the Lake County Tourism Council, were happy to host the 2011 USA Synchro Synchronized Swimming Junior Nationals at the National Training Center in Clermont.

The tournament consisted of 28 teams from all over the country, spreading as far as California and Washington State, as well as two international teams, one from Canada and the other from Peru. In total, we had over 170 athletes and 40 coaches in attendance for the three day tournament.  Please check out our Facebook page for pictures from the event and click HERE for a video that shows what it takes to be a synchronized swimmer.

Up next, we will be hosting the Horizon League Golf Championship, April 21 - 24 at Mission Inn Resort & Club.  This will be the first time for this Championship in Lake County, which will bring in teams from around the mid-west including the NCAA Men's Basketball runner up, Butler Bulldogs.  The following week we welcome the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship for the second consecutive time, also at Mission Inn.

We cap off our busy spring with the return of the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships at the Mission Inn Resort from May 8 - 13.  Teams from across the United States will converge on Lake County for the opportunity to be crowned national champions!

Thank you for your support as we continue to market Lake County as the "Ultimate Sports Destination".

IIN THE PIPELINE

The Sports Commission, in partnership with the Mission Inn Resort and St. Johns University, are in the planning stages of developing a collegiate golf tournament to be staged in early January of 2011.  The tournament would consist of individual collegiate players looking to play over the holiday break before they head back to college.  Our goal in the first year is to attract approximately 75 golfers from across the United States to Lake County.  Additional family members and coaches would be expected to attend.  As more details come together, we will be sure to pass them on.

In addition, we recently met with City of Tavares to explore the opportunity to host more events at Wooten Park.  Among the events discussed was the opportunity to potentially target hosting some motorized boat races on Lake Dora.  Several regional and national organizations have been initially identified as potential fits including the American Power Boat Association, with one in particular looking at needing a host venue for a National and/or International event for this or next fall.  Their particular event would attract 80 - 100 boats from across the region and generate approximately 400+ room nights for the community. Stay tuned!

As we look towards developing more events in Lake County, the Sports Commission recently met with the Championships Training Academy with respect to partnering on some future youth team events and training camps in the Mt. Dora area.   Their facility resides in Mt. Dora and consists of over 22k square feet of performance training space including a 75 yards of field turf, 3,000 sq ft of weightless weight room featuring pneumatic resistance equipment, professional level baseball training area, video technology equipment and much more.

We expect some of these created events will take place at the Champions Training Academy, with the rest taking place at sports venues located throughout the northern part of Lake County.
