A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM | |
The madness of March sports is beginning! Taking a look at one of events that "jumpstarted" the madness, the 53rd Annual Daytona 500, featuring forty-three of the best stock car drivers in the world, was a huge success. Congratulations to the Daytona International Speedway and Trevor Bayne for a big win! Trevor is the youngest driver to win "The Great American Race". March madness on motorcycles is a tradition at Daytona's Bike Week. The 70th anniversary of Daytona Bike Week is being held March 4-13, 2011 in Daytona Beach. Events include contest and prizes, tours, live bands and more. Click here for all your bike week needs!
Madness in sports is resonating throughout the area! Spring training has officially started for the Daytona Cubs out in Mesa, Arizona. Make sure you're there for Opening Night presented by Wendy's on Friday, April 8th as they play the Brevard County Manatees. Friday's games are also known as Fantastic Fridays which include Ladies Night, giveaways and the chance for kids to run the bases after the game.
Looking ahead, April is going to be a sunny month! That's because the Sports Commission, in partnership with Stetson University, will host the Atlantic Sun Women's Golf Championship and Men's & Women's Tennis Championship. Golf will take place at Victoria Hills Golf Club, April 10-12 and tennis will be held on campus at Stetson, April 13-16. Join us in cheering on the Hatters golf and tennis teams.
On the business development front, your Sports Commission had an active month both evaluating opportunities and working with potential event partners. Read about our recent activity below in this month's impact report.
March is one of the best months on the sports calendar and April is an enjoyable encore.
Happy March! |

IN THE PIPELINE |
On the business development front, the Sports Commission has been making our way through the county! If you haven't been to Port Orange lately, you're missing a beautiful facility! New to Port Orange is the Coraci Park which features two (2) competition softball fields on about 50 acres of land. Recently the Central Florida Sports Commission met with the Parks and Recreation Department of Port Orange in hopes of bringing tournaments and events to the area, enhancing the economic development of Volusia County. As for hotels, there is only one located in Port Orange so the wealth will be spread around Volusia County. We look forward to reporting progress soon!
In addition we recently spoke with Michael O'Shaughnessy, organizer of the East Coast Paddleboard Championships, to determine how we can better assist his organization in the planning and execution of their annual event. The 14thAnnual East Coast Paddle Board Championships will be held in Ponce Inlet, Saturday June 18th. Over 100 paddlers from all over the United States will be vying for the right to be called East Coast Paddleboard Champion. For more information or to find out how you can become involved, visit www.paddleboards.com. We look forward to seeing you in June.
Also, the Sports Commission has been in touch with 3v3 Live Soccer about hosting a local qualifier event in Ormond Beach. 3v3 Live Soccer is expanding its national presence into the State of Florida and would like to develop a youth tournament/qualifier in Ormond Beach this year. Stay tuned for more information on this tournament. |

WINS & LOSSES
(Through February, 2011) |
- Bids Submitted - 2
- Wins- 1
- Losses- 1
Recently we received notification from Red Frog Events, who launched their first Beach Palooza event last January on the sandy shores of Daytona Beach, will not be returning to Volusia County. In order to make the event profitable and position it for growth, they feel they need to move it to a larger market and draw in more runners. In addition, their request for financial assistance was not deemed as a good investment of our limited resource at this time. As Beach Palooza expands and establishes itself nationally with additional tour stops, we hope they will consider a return to Daytona Beach.
On a positive note, the Let It Fly World Championships, a national flag football tournament, will be returning to Volusia County for the 3rd year in a row. Thanks to financial assistance being provided by the Halifax Area Advertising Authority, we are thrilled to have the Let it Fly Championships returning to our region! This year's event will take place at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, May 28-29th. Last year this event brought in more than 1,100 room nights, 1,500 participants and spectators and nearly $650,000 in economic impact. We hope 2011 is an even bigger success!
