A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

FORE!!!! February kicks off a busy season of golf events for the Central Florida Sports Commission and Lake County.

As we reflect on 2010, we are pleased to announce that as a result of the Sports Commissions efforts, Lake County was the beneficiary of more than $5 million in economic impact and 7,278 room nights. See below for the complete year end impact.

We start of the season with the UCF Challenge Women's Golf Invitational being held at Red Tail Golf Club.  The UCF Challenge will feature some of the best golfers from around the country with highly ranked teams, such as UCF, USF, East Carolina, Oklahoma and Kentucky, competing in this annual event.  We then head down to Mission Inn Resort and Club for the annual St. John's Spring Fling March 10 - 13, followed by the Horizon League Golf Championship April 21 -24, a new event for Lake County. Next on the tee at Mission Inn is the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship, April 28 - May 1 and we wrap up the season at Mission Inn with the NCAA DIII Women's Golf Championship, May 7-13.

And if that is not enough golf for you, we recently received some encouraging news on another event prospect. Learn more about this and more of our business development efforts below.

Our 2011 is already shaping up to be one of the best yet for Lake County. Thank you for your support as we continue to market Lake County as the "Ultimate Sports Destination".

Best Regards,
Sam Stark

IIN THE PIPELINE

On the business development front, the Sports Commission recently sent staff to the NCAA Convention in San Antonio, Texas from January 11 - 14, 2011.  This convention provided the Sports Commission the opportunity to network with college administrators, coaches and event partners to promote Lake County as a destination for future sports events, conferences and meetings. During the convention, we had a chance to discuss future event and/or team training opportunities with the Sunshine State Conference, Horizon League, Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and Great Northeast Athletic Conference, just to name a few.

On the heels of the NCAA Convention, the Sports Commission is researching the possibility of attending the 2011 NACDA Convention (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) which will be held at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando this coming June.   This conference brings together collegiate athletic directors and other administrative staff & coaches from across the United States for educational and networking seminars and meetings.  This convention might provide the Sports Commission and our partners the opportunity to showcase our venues for future event and team training opportunities.  We hope to make a decision on whether to attend the convention within the next month, so stay tuned.

January was a busy month for the Sports Commission on the business development front.  As mentioned in last month's impact report, the Sports Commission was in final preparations for submitting several proposals to the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA).  Since in our last correspondence, the Sports Commission forwarded proposals to the FHSAA for the right to stage the following state championships in Lake County, those being the 2011-2012 Boys & Girls Golf Finals and the 2012-2013 Girls Softball Finals.  The Girls Softball Finals would be staged at the Legends Way Ballfields at the National Training Center in Clermont.   The Boys & Girls Golf Finals would be staged at the Mission Inn Resort, Harbor Hills Country Club and Deer Island Country Club.   In fact, the Sports Commission was able to host a site visit with the FHSAA to review the proposed golf courses and discuss other elements of our proposal.   The FHSAA has notified our office that a formal announcement on where the Golf Finals will be staged should come within the next 30 days.

In addition, the Sports Commission, in conjunction with the Sunshine State Conference, recently forwarded a bid to the NCAA for the opportunity to host the 2013 Men's Division II Golf Regional.  The event would be staged at the Mission Inn Resort in early May of 2013.  Approximately 130+ golfers and coaches would be in attendance, with teams and individuals competing for the opportunity to qualify for the 2013 Men's Division I National Championship.
