A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM
Taking a quick look back at 2010, we are pleased to announce that as a result of the Sports Commissions efforts in collaboration with our local partners, Volusia County was the beneficiary of more than $9.2 million in economic impact and 18,700 room nights. See below for the complete year end impact.
Did you know that Heart Disease is the number one killer in America? February is American Heart Month, and what better way to keep your heart healthy than with sports! On January 31st, Volusia County Chair Frank T. Bruno Jr. delivered the annual State of the County address, focusing on the county's challenges and accomplishments during 2010 and goals for the coming year. As your Sports Commission works hard to drive economic impact into the county, the Ocean Center is a premier venue for these opportunities. "The Ocean Center last year generated more than $1.8 million in rental revenue," stated Bruno, "thanks to 82 events that were held in the expanded complex only a few steps from the world's most famous beach." A perfect example of one of those events will be the 2011 USA Wrestling Cadet Duals. The Cadet Duals, to be held at the Ocean Center this June, is expected to bring in more than 2,000 + athletes, coaches, spectators and officials from across the United States and generate over 1 million in economic impact for Volusia County.
On the business development front, your Sports Commission had an active month both evaluating opportunities and out on the road talking with potential event partners. Read about our recent activity below in this month's impact report.
Happy February! |

IN THE PIPELINE |
On the business development front, the Sports Commission has been busy meeting with Athletic Directors and facilities in Volusia County. Most recently we met with Dr. Jose Fernandez, Athletic Director of New Smyrna Beach High School and Head Baseball Coach, Kenney Lutz. Together we are working together to expand on an All-Star Baseball Tournament that was held in Volusia County last year. We are looking forward to working together and bringing in more teams from all over Florida to participate in this event, along with the possibility of developing one or more additional events.
In other news, the Sports Commission recently sent staff to the NCAA Convention in San Antonio, Texas from January 11 - 14, 2011. This convention provided the Sports Commission the opportunity to network with college administrators, coaches and event partners to promote Volusia County as a destination for future sports events, conferences and meetings. During the convention, we had a chance to discuss future event and/or team training opportunities with the Sunshine State Conference, Horizon League, Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and Great Northeast Athletic Conference, just to name a few.
On the heels of the NCAA Convention, the Sports Commission is researching the possibility of attending the 2011 NACDA Convention (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) which will be held at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando this coming June. This conference brings together collegiate athletic directors and other administrative staff & coaches from across the United States for educational and networking seminars and meetings. This convention might provide the Sports Commission and our partners the opportunity to showcase our venues for future event and team training opportunities. We hope to make a decision on whether to attend the convention within the next month, so stay tuned. |

WINS & LOSSES
(Through January, 2011)
Recently we received notification from USA Weightlifting that they were re-opening the bid process to host the 2011 USA Weightlifting National Championship. Based on our diligence with both the Daytona Beach Area CVB and weightlifting partners at Spruce Creek High School, the hosting requirements from both a venue and financial standpoint did not provide a fair and equitable economic return. That being said, we ultimately decided not to place a bid on this event. However, there is a USA Weightlifting School Age Tournament open for hosting in 2012 that we plan to submit a proposal for by the deadline of May 1st. Based on our initial research, we believe this event would provide a better return on our investment of time and resource. Look for more information on this and other USA Weightlifting event opportunities in coming impact reports.

COMMUNITY PROFILE |
Congratulations to Mainland High School football player, Tyrrell Burriss. Tyrrell announced his decision to accept a football scholarship with North Carolina State. Burriss, a 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back who also had offers from Colorado State and Middle Tennessee State, started for most of two seasons with the Bucs. He made 27 tackles with four pass break-ups last fall and was a consistent contributor to his team. North Carolina State's coach, Tom O'Brien said: "We talked to people in camps that raved about his ability to change directions; he's got some explosiveness. Those are all things that can help us at this level." Again congratulations and best of luck to Tyrrell in his football career.
