A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

It feels like the cold snap of the winter is behind us and things are about to heat up in Seminole County!

We are pleased to announce that as a result of the Sports Commissions efforts, Seminole County was the beneficiary of more than $7.8 million in economic impact and 10,088 room nights. See below for the complete year end impact. With a great 2010 in the books, we are focused on 2011 and the great events that are already in place for Seminole County, as well as the events that will soon call Seminole County home!

In just a few short weeks, the 2011 Florida Cup will be taking place at Sylvan Lake Park and Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford.  Last year, this event drew in 86 teams from throughout the state of Florida for 2 days of great competition, generating 1,000+ room nights and just over a million dollars in direct economic impact.  We are looking forward to another great event!

Shortly after the soccer players leave Seminole, the hard hitting action will be serving Seminole County with some great competition!  For the 3rd consecutive year the 1A & 2A Florida High School Tennis Finals will be held at Red Bug Park and Sylvan Lake Park in mid April.  This event is a great example of the CFSC and Seminole County Leisure Service Department working together through TEAM SEMINOLE, to not only put on a great event but keep them coming back year after year!

As always, please do not hesitate to call should you have any questions and we look forward to partnering with TEAM SEMINOLE to generate more great sports activity in Seminole County.

Best Regards,
Sam Stark

IN THE PIPELINE

The CFSC, in conjunction with Seminole County Convention & Visitors Bureau, recently sent staff to the NCAA Convention in San Antonio, Texas from January 11 - 14, 2011.  This convention provided the Sports Commission and Seminole Convention & Visitors Bureau the opportunity to network with college administrators, coaches and event partners to promote Seminole County as a destination for future sports events, conferences and meetings. During the convention, we had a chance to discuss future event and/or team training opportunities with the Sunshine State Conference, Horizon League, Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and Great Northeast Athletic Conference, just to name a few.

On the heels of the NCAA Convention, the Sports Commission is researching the possibility of attending the 2011 NACDA Convention (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) which will be held at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando this coming June.   This conference brings together collegiate athletic directors and other administrative staff & coaches from across the United States for educational and networking seminars and meetings.  This convention might provide the Sports Commission and our partners the opportunity to showcase our venues for future event and team training opportunities.  We hope to make a decision on whether to attend the convention within the next month, so stay tuned.

The Seminole County Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Sports Commission recently forwarded a multi-year proposal to the Elite Club National League to once again stage their Winter Soccer Showcase in December of 2011 & 2012 in Sanford.  This past December's event proved to be an economic home room for hotels and other businesses located within Seminole County, with over 3,000 room nights being generated.    Should ECNL decide to return to Seminole County this year, there is a chance that an additional 30 - 40 teams from across the United States might participate in the event.  ECNL has indicated that a formal decision should be made within the next month or so, so keep your fingers crossed!

Lake Mary Soccer Player Takes His Skills to Air Force Academy

Although the Lake Mary boys soccer season was shorter than most expected, for senior Andy Marty, his future is just beginning.  The hard work of attaining a 4.5 GPA has given him the opportunity to attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs this fall.  Although he has completed the grueling application process, the hard work is just beginning.  Not only will Andy be physically preparing his body for the physical military training he will encounter, but also keeping his soccer skills fine tuned as he hopes to be a walk on at the Academy's men's soccer program!

We at the Sports Commission would like to congratulate Andy on his accomplishments while at Lake Mary, and wish him the best of luck in his endeavors at the Air Force Academy! For the full article from the Orlando Sentinel please click HERE.
