| | A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM | |
Sports is big business! Not only because of the multi-million dollar contracts that professional athletes receive or the multi-billion dollar deals leagues sign with TV networks, but sports on a local level plays an instrumental role as a substantial piece of our tourism economy. Last year, in the City of Orlando and Orange County alone, the Central Florida Sports Commission was responsible for more than $45 million in economic impact and 81,414 room nights.
If you want to learn more about how the economic impact of sports affects our community, you will not want to miss the 2nd Annual Business of Sports Breakfast, co-hosted by the Orlando Business Journal and the Central Florida Sports Commission. Check out the featured article section for more information, but reserve your table or seat today, as this event will sell out!
The Central Florida Sports Commission, along with our partners at the City of Orlando, Florida Citrus Sports and Visit Orlando, hosted the 86th Annual East-West Shrine Game on January 22nd at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Nearly 10,000 spectators from across the United States attended the oldest college all-star game in the country. Click on the video to check out some exciting game footage.
On the business development front, the Sports Commission was busy trying to secure the return of multiple high school events for our community, while hitting the road to network with college administrators from across the United States. Read about our recent activity later on in this month's impact report.
Thank you for your continued support, as we continue to market Orlando and Orange County as the "Ultimate Sports Destination".

IN THE PIPELINE | |

The Sports Commission recently sent staff to the NCAA Convention in San Antonio, Texas from January 11 - 14, 2011. This convention provided the Sports Commission the opportunity to network with college administrators, coaches and event partners to promote Orange County as a destination for future sports events, conferences and meetings. During the convention, we had a chance to discuss future event and/or team training opportunities with the Sunshine State Conference, Horizon League, Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and Great Northeast Athletic Conference, just to name a few.
On the heels of the NCAA Convention, the Sports Commission is making plans to attend the 2011 NACDA Convention (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) which will be held at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando this coming June. This conference brings together collegiate athletic directors and other administrative staff & coaches from across the United States for educational and networking seminars and meetings. This convention might provide the Sports Commission and our partners the opportunity to showcase our venues for future event and team training opportunities. We hope to make a decision on whether to attend the convention within the next month, so stay tuned. |

As indicated in last month's impact report, the Sports Commission was in final preparations to submit multiple proposals to the Florida High School Athletic Association. Since our last correspondence, the Sports Commission submitted bids to host or co-host the following events in Orange County/City of Orlando: 2011 - 2013 Football Finals (Citrus Bowl), 2013 - 2014 Boys & Girls Basketball Finals (Amway Center), 2011 - 2012 Boys & Girls Swimming & Diving Finals (YMCA Aquatic Center) and 2012 - 2013 Boys & Girls Lacrosse Finals (West Orange High School). Each of the aforementioned events have been a tremendous success within Orange County and City of Orlando, so we hope to have the opportunity to once again stage each within our community. We expect to receive feedback from the FHSAA within the next month, so stay tuned.
In other news, the Sports Commission and Visit Orlando are in the process of evaluating an opportunity to host the 2015 FIG World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. The event would be staged at the Amway Center in late September/early October over the course of 18 days. Gymnastics teams from across the world, along with thousands of spectators, would be in attendance. Based on previous attendance numbers, it is expected that this event would generate 18,000+ room nights for the region. As more details come available relative to this event opportunity, we will be sure to share those with you.
