The rosters for the 86th East-West Shrine Game are nearly complete. The East Team includes UCF's own Bruce Miller & Jah Reid. Miller & Reid both served as team captains this year as UCF went 11-3, won the Conf. USA Championship, and defeated Georgia in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

In addition to the two UCF standouts, 88 of the best college seniors from around the country have committed to play in the game. Some of the most notable players include: Tyrod Taylor - Virginia Tech's electrifying quarterback who led the Hokies to an ACC Championship and an Orange Bowl berth; Scott Tolzien - Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner who quarterbacked Wisconsin to a Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl appearance; Jeff Maehl - Oregon's standout wide receiver who led all receivers with 9 catches and 133 yards in the Duck's last second loss in the BCS National Championship; Ryan Whalen - Stanford's leading wide receiver helped the Cardinal to a Orange Bowl victory; and Ricky Dobbs - Navy's dual threat quarterback holds the NCAA record for most rushing touchdowns (41) by a quarterback in back-to back years.

Dan Reeves & Wade Phillips will coach the game, which will be played at the Citrus Bowl on Jan 22. Reeves & Phillips both have impressive records as NFL coaches and collectively support the true purpose of the Game, which is to raise funds and awareness for Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The Game will kick off at 4pm, and tickets start as low as $5. Click HERE to get yours today!

 A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

On behalf of the Central Florida Sports Commission, I would like to thank everyone for all of your hard work which made 2010 a very successful year for Orange County, the City of Orlando and the Sports Commission. We are excited about what 2011 will bring, and how we can continue to market our region as a premiere destination for Sports Entertainment.

December saw the best high school football players in Florida competing at the FHSAA Football Finals in eight great games here at the Citrus Bowl. With a hard fought 42-27 loss to Miami Central, Orlando's own Dr. Phillips High School fell just short of the perfect season in the 6A state championship game. Initial estimates indicate that the FHSAA Football Finals will generate nearly $5 million in economic impact for our community.

January brings some of the best college seniors to Orlando to play in the 86th Annual East-West Shrine Game. Check out the featured article section for more information, and make sure to join us for this great game that is quickly becoming part of the annual football landscape in Orlando.

The New Year brings new resolutions for many of you and new opportunities to Central Florida. The Sports Commission has already submitted 2 bids this year and with recent travel to two industry trade shows, we hope to provide many new event prospects for our community. Read about our recent activity below in this month's impact report.

Happy New Year!

Best Regards,

In early December, the Sports Commission sent staff to the US Sports Congress in Ft Myers, Florida.  The US Sports Congress brings Sports Commissions and event organizers together to network and discuss the state of the industry.  Over 25+ event organizers were in attendance a this year's conference such as Big Shots Basketball, USA Synchronized Swimming, Youth Basketball of America and USA Wrestling, just to name a few.  We plan to follow up with each organization to identify which of their event properties might be good fits within our venues in the City of Orlando and Orange County.

In addition, the CFSC, in conjunction with Visit Orlando, will be sending staff to the NCAA Convention in San Antonio, Texas.  This convention will provide the Sports Commission and Visit Orlando the opportunity to network with college administrators, coaches and event partners to promote the City of Orlando and Orange County as a destination for future sports events, conferences and meetings.  We will share more details about our trip in next month's impact reports.

COMMUNITY PROFILEC

Go Knights!

UCF is currently in the midst of an unprecedented run of success for their football and basketball programs.

The football team finished an 11-3 season with a Conference USA Championship and the school's first ever bowl victory. The 10-6 win over Georgia in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl gave UCF eleven wins for the first time in school history and propelled the team to 20th in the final USA Today Coaches Poll and 21st in the final AP Poll.

On the court, the UCF men's basketball team, lead by first year head coach Donnie Jones, has started the year 14 and 1. After running off 14 straight victories to begin the season, the Nights are currently ranked 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and 23rd in the AP Poll. UCF has faced, and defeated, four squads that are listed in the top 50: Florida (14), Miami (33), Princeton (45) and Marshall (46).

The final ranking for football also places the Knights in the enviable position of remaining on the very short list of schools that are ranked in both football and men's basketball. The Knights are joined in this elite grouping by Michigan State, Missouri, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Wisconsin.
