IN THE PIPELINE |
On the business development front, the Sports Commission, in partnership with the Daytona Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau and Ocean Center, recently submitted a bid proposal to USA Fencing for the opportunity to host 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 Junior/Cadet North American Cup Tournament. This event would attract nearly 900 fencers from across the United States to Daytona Beach In early November for four (4) days of competition. The mission of USA Fencing is to develop fencers to achieve international success and to administer and promote the sport within the United States. We expect to have an answer from USA Fencing by the end of this month, so stay tuned!

In other news, the Sports Commission, in conjunction with the Daytona Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, is currently reviewing RFP's from the Florida High School Athletic Association that were recently released in November. In all, over 12 State Finals are up for bid for hosting, starting in the fall of 2011. Boys & Girls Basketball, Boys Wrestling, Girls Volleyball and Boys & Girls Water Polo are a few of the State Finals under consideration for venues within Volusia County. We hope to submit one or more proposals based on our ability to meet the hosting requirements as requested by the FHSAA. Bids are due to the FHSAA by early January. |

On the business development front, Daytona Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission recently sent a letter of decline to YATSA (Youth Amateur Travel Sports Association) for the opportunity to host several events within Volusia County in 2011. YATSA facilitates youth and amateur sporting events that include baseball, basketball, soccer, golf, football and volleyball tournaments throughout the Southeast. Some of their annual events include: All American Woodbat Classic as well as the Elite 8 Hardwood Classic, both held in Atlanta, GA. Unfortunately, the bid fees associated with hosting their events did not provide a fair and equitable economic return on our financial investment.
In other news, it doesn't appear that the Sports Commission and Daytona Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau will be able to host the 360 All American Bowl in Daytona Beach in early 2011. As mentioned in our October Impact Report, the All American Bowl would have brought the top Division II and III college seniors, free agents and other eligible athletes together in an All Star Bowl setting. While we had a great site with event organizers in September, we are not able to provide the necessary financial support requested. Once again, the financial assistance requested by the event organizer did not generate a significant return in room nights and economic impact

For the fourth year in a row, the Stetson women's golf team claimed victory at its own Holiday Inn Express Hatter Classic, rallying from a six-stroke deficit entering the final round and winning a three-hole playoff over Daytona State. Stetson needed to go three extra holes to continue its home winning streak dating back to 2007; overall the streak is five straight wins at Victoria Hills, counting the 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. The Hatters and Daytona State finished at 29 over par overall, one shot better than Jacksonville State. Completing the field this tournament were Florida Atlantic (+55), McNeese State (+75), FGCU (+81), Bethune-Cookman (+120), USC Upstate (+136) and Lipscomb (+154).
