A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

We hope this month's activity letter finds you well. A busy month of events in October, leads way to November and a continued focus on new event opportunities in Lake County.

Four (4) very different crowds descended on Lake County in October, as we hosted the INT Water-Ski US Championships, the AJGA All Star Golf Invitational, the Florida Rugby Union All Florida Day and the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic golf tournament. The one thing all of these events did have in common: a huge economic impact for Lake County. We are still finalizing the exact impact for each event, but all four (4) events combined are expected to generate more than $1.5 million in economic impact and over 2,000 hotel room nights in Lake County.  Based on our initial projections, October might have our busiest month to date since our partnership began in Lake County, and we hope this is a trend moving forward as we look towards 2011 and beyond.

On the business development front, your Sports Commission had an active month identifying future event opportunities for Lake County sports venues. The CFSC sent staff to several conferences in both Gainesville, Florida and Charlotte, North Carolina for the purpose of connecting with both existing and new event partners that might find Lake County a potential home for their championships.  Read about our recent activity below in this month's impact report.

Lastly, we are sad to report that Jon Baran, our Lake County Marketing & Events Manager, recently left the Sports Commission to pursue other opportunities.  Jon was with us for over three years, and we hope you will join us in wishing him the very best in his future endeavors.  To that end, we have already made an offer to a candidate to replace Jon, and plan to have our new Lake County Marketing & Events Manager in place before Thanksgiving.

Thank you for your support as we continue our extensive work to bring new and exciting sports related events and activities to Lake County.

Best Regards,
Sam Stark

IIN THE PIPELINE

The Sports Commission recently sent staff to the TEAMS Conference held in Charlotte, North Carolina in late October.  Hosted by SPORTSTRAVEL Magazine, the conference features an expo with event organizers seeking to partner with sports commissions and sports destinations to host future sports related events and activities.  We meet with over 30+ national event organizers, with the goal of identifying future opportunities for venues within Lake County.  Several groups of note that might provide future opportunities for Lake County include US Canoe & Kayak, FLW Outdoors, NAIA, Kick It 3 V 3 Soccer Tour and Nations Baseball, just to name a few.

In other news, the Sports Commission recently sent several staff to Gainesville to meet with the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) for the purpose of identifying future FHSAA State Championships events currently up for bid.  A majority of their statewide events are up for bid at the end of the school year.  Boys & Girls Golf and Cross Country are few of the events under consideration for Lake County.  Bids will be due to the FHSAA in early January, so stay tuned on which might be good fits for Lake County!

The Sports Commission recently received some bad news regarding the Rock the Box Lacrosse Tour.  As reported in last month's impact report, the Rock the Box Lacrosse tour has decided to bring their tour to the Hickory Point Soccer fields in November. This tournament was going to be part of a new nationwide series of 5 vs. 5 outdoor lacrosse events taking place throughout the remainder of 2010 and into 2011. Unfortunately, the tour has postponed all upcoming events.  Should they re-organize the tour, we will look to engage them again for a possible event next fall.

In addition, we have set up a site visit with 3v3 Live Soccer Tour to possibly hold both a local qualifier event, along with a regional qualifier, next spring and summer in Lake County.   Representatives will be touring venues throughout the State of Florida, so we hope to lock down future dates with them while they are in Lake County.  Stay tuned!
