A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

With some crisp temperatures moving in, fall is definitely in the air, and that means that football season is in full swing. The Tuskers have just two games left before the playoffs, UCF has reeled off 5 straight wins and is pursuing a conference championship, and high school teams have just one regular season game left before beginning the playoffs and the Road to Orlando.

The Road to Orlando ends at the Florida Citrus Bowl in December as the state's best high school football teams will compete for the state title. 2010 FHSAA Football Finals are hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission, the City of Orlando, Edgewater High School and Orange County Public Schools. The four-day event consists of eight state championship games with two games played on Friday and two games played on Saturday of both weekends. The dates for the 2010 football finals are Dec. 10, 11, 17 and 18. Several local teams, including Dr. Phillips, Winter Park, Apopka and Jones, have a chance to make it to the state championship game. The Sports Commission recently sent staff to the TEAMS Conference held in Charlotte, North Carolina in late October.  Hosted by SPORTSTRAVEL Magazine, the conference features an expo with event organizers seeking to partner with sports commissions and sports destinations to host future sports related events and activities.  We meet with over 30+ national event organizers, with the goal of identifying future opportunities for venues within Osceola County.  Several groups of note that might provide future opportunities for Orange County include US Canoe & Kayak, Varsity Spirit Cheerleading,  USA Figure Skating and Nations Baseball, just to name a few.

In other news, the Sports Commission recently sent several staff to Gainesville to meet with the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) for the purpose of identifying future FHSAA State Championships events currently up for bid.   Boys & Girls Basketball, Boys Wrestling, Boys Tackle Football and Boys and Girls Swimming & Diving are a few of the events that will be up for bid at the end of the year.  Those events, among others, are under consideration for venues within City of Orlando and Orange County.  Bids will be due to the FHSAA by early January, so stay tuned!

The Sports Commission, in conjunction with the Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau (OOCVB), recently conducted a site visit with representatives from USA Track & Field with respect to hosting the 2015 or 2016 USA Track & Field Annual Meetings in Orlando.   The conference would take place in early December, and would attract approximately 1,500 attendees to our community for several days of meetings.  We received great feedback with respect to our tour of potential host properties, so the next step will be for the Sports Commission and OOCVB to travel to Virginia Beach, VA in early December to give a final presentation to the USA Track & Field selection committee.   We expect a decision will be made soon thereafter, so the Sports Commission and OOCVB hope to make an announcement that the conference is coming to Orlando in a future impact report.

In addition, the Sports Commission, in partnership with the City of Orlando, Orlando Magic and Florida Citrus Sports, recently welcomed several event organizers to town in conjunction with the Orlando Magic's first regular season home game.   Representatives from the Atlantic Coast Conference, NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee and USA Gymnastics were able to take in the Magic's game against Washington, while getting an advanced look at the new Amway Center.  The Sports Commission has targeted events with each to stage at the new arena, so this provided us the opportunity to learn more about their overall hosting requirements, while showcasing the new Amway Center.
