The Sports Commission recently sent staff to the TEAMS Conference held in Charlotte, North Carolina in late October.  Hosted by SPORTSTRAVEL Magazine, the conference features an expo with event organizers seeking to partner with sports commissions and sports destinations to host future sports related events and activities.  We meet with over 30+ national event organizers, with the goal of identifying future opportunities for venues within Osceola County.  Several groups of note that might provide future opportunities for Volusia County include US Canoe & Kayak, PSA Sports (on behalf of USA Fencing), NAIA, Big Shots Basketball and Nations Baseball, just to name a few.

In other news, the Sports Commission recently sent several staff to Gainesville to meet with the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) for the purpose of identifying future FHSAA State Championships events currently up for bid.   Boys & Girls Basketball, Boys Wrestling, Boys & Girls Golf and Girls Volleyball are a few of the events under consideration for venues within Volusia County.  Bids will be due to the FHSAA in early January, so stay tuned!

On the business development front, the Sports Commission, in partnership with the Daytona Convention and Visitors Bureau, recently met with representatives of Youth Amateur Travel Sports Association (YATSA). YATSA facilitates youth and amateur sporting events that include baseball, basketball, soccer, golf, football and volleyball. Some of their annual events include: All American Woodbat Classic as well as the Elite 8 Hardwood Classic, both held in Atlanta, GA.  Each of these events brings in teams from across the country.  We will keep you updated on any progress made with YATSA, as we look forward to the possibility of hosting their events for the first time ever in Daytona in 2011.

In addition, the Sports Commission is in the beginning stages of forming a relationship with the soccer club based out of the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. The soccer club is an active member within Florida Youth Soccer Association (FYSA), and is eager to host more regional youth soccer tournaments out of their facilities in Ormond Beach.  Multiple events are targeted for spring of 2011, so stay tuned for more information on each.

COMMUNITY PROFILECommunity

The Daytona Beach Half Marathon held Sunday, October 31, 2010, brought out Daytona's finest runners. For many, these events are not so much about where they finish as how they got there. A local Volusia County resident of Daytona Beach, Teri Hansen, shared her story with the Daytona Beach News-Journal. She is one of the many people who ran the 2010 Daytona Beach Half Marathon and found out running is a way to get through the daily challenges of life.  As a New Year's resolution in 2009, Teri started running as a way to keep in shape and planned to run her first half-marathon in January, until she got pregnant. She continued to run during her pregnancy and at 5 months ran in the DeLand Fall Run 10k. She came in dead last and from there was even more motivated to run again. Now, the mother of a 7-month-old, who had never run before nor considered herself an athletic person, is in the best shape of her life!  For more information and to read other stories like these, please click HERE
