A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

The love bugs are back in full force and the humidity is slowly fading away; it must be fall!

The big sports news out of Lake County in September was the staging of the 2010 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Fall Preview. As you know, Lake County and the Mission Inn Resort will play host to the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship once again in the spring of 2011, and the Fall Preview was an opportunity for some of the best programs in the country to come to the resort to get a taste of the course they are all fighting to get back to in May. Fifty-six of the best Division III collegiate golfers participated in the tournament, and in the end, as a surprise to no one, the fourteen time defending national champs Methodist University came away victorious.

Coming up in October, Lake County will play host to some fantastic events, each utilizing a different venue that showcases the county's truly unique natural landscape. First up, INT Water-ski will be bringing their US Championships to the water of Sunset Lakes in Groveland during the second weekend in October. The INT League hosts amateur water-ski, wakeboard, kneeboard, and wake skate tournaments nationwide, and the Lake County stop will crown a national champion in each division for the 2010 season.

That same weekend, the Florida Rugby Union will be making their annual visit to Hickory Point to hold their All Florida Day event, which has grown large enough to warrant a full weekend. The top rugby club teams in the state will battle each other on the pitch in Tavares for a weekend of hard hitting fun.

Lastly, our friends from St. John's University will make their second visit of the year to the Mission Inn Resort & Club as they host the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic golf tournament. Top Division I and II golf programs will head to Howey-in-the-Hills for a 54-hole tournament, which will be held for the first time on the Las Colinas course.

As you can see you have a very exciting fall lined up, and we hope you can make it out to watch one of these fantastic events in person.

Best Regards,
Sam Stark

IIN THE PIPELINE

Off the links, the Sports Commission is speaking with Pinnacle Sports Productions in regards to their 3v3 Live Soccer Tournament. 3v3 Live Tournaments are a one to two-day tournament open to teams of all skill levels, from ages U6 to adult. A local qualifier and regional tournament are being considered for Lake County. Details such as specific dates and venues are still being discussed.  As always, we will keep you informed with any progress on these great event opportunities.

On the business development front, the Sports Commission is in talks with the Hooters Golf Tour about bringing their 2011 season opening event to Lake County. The Hooters Tour if a professional golf tour of young and up-and-coming golfers on the cusp of making it to the PGA. The event would most likely take place in early February of 2011.

The Sports commission received two pieces of good news this month. First, the Rock the Box Lacrosse tour has decided to bring their tour to the Hickory Point Soccer fields just next month. This tournament is part of a new nationwide series of 5 vs. 5 outdoor lacrosse events taking place throughout the remainder of 2010, and we are thrilled to be a part of their inaugural year.

Secondly, another collegiate golf championship is on the way to Mission Inn. Coming up in April of 2011, the Horizon League will become the latest conference to crown their champion right here in Lake County. The Horizon League is based out of Indianapolis and features a collection of Midwestern schools, such as Loyola (Chicago) and basketball bracket buster Butler, and we are sure they cannot wait to bring their golf clubs to sunny Central Florida. We welcome our new event partners to Lake County!

COMMUNITY PROFILE

C

The beautiful multi-purpose fields at Hickory Point have hosted some of the Sports Commissions finest events over the years, but every November the park is transported hundreds of years in the past with the Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire. Entering its ninth year, the Faire features over 100 historical performers, including: jugglers, knights in armor, jousters, fire-eaters, pirates, dancers and a variety of musicians. Over sixty artisans fill the village, working in mediums such as pottery, leather work, blacksmithing, sculpture, candle making, just to name a few. The crafts and entertainment combine with thematic games and foods to create a glimpse of marketplace celebrations and life in the 16th century. The event is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the Education Foundation of Lake County, a 501 (c) (3) that serves as the direct support organization for the Lake County Public School District.
