TAG UP for Youth and Sports in Florida.

Purchase a professional sports license plate and be a supporter of sports in Florida. The Central Florida Sports Commission and each of Florida's nine professional sports teams encourage you to purchase the specialty sports tag of your choice. Show pride in your favorite Florida team while providing support to youth charities and Florida's communities.  Proceeds from the additional $25 tag fee directly support each team's designated youth charity and the development of major and regional sports events throughout Florida. Each year the tag program generates over $250,000 for local youth charities and supports major and regional sports events throughout Florida's communities. Click HERE for more information.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

Great news! We have hired a new Volusia County Manager. Claire Wright comes to us from the Orlando Magic, working specifically for the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation. She has extensive community relations, marketing and event experience, and will be a great asset for the CFSC and Volusia County. Claire will start on September 13th and we look forward to introducing her to you in the coming weeks.  She can be reached at cwright @centralfloridasports.org.

Plans continue for the Daytona Beach Half Marathon, which is tracking towards another strong turnout for this popular race on October 31st. We have some great partners on board (including Michelob Ultra, Krispy Kreme, Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, Hooters, and more) that will make the post race party one of the best in the business. For the most recent updates, check out our website www.daytonbeachhalf.com or click HERE to join our Facebook page.

In addition to the Half, our busy fall continues in November with the Men's & Women's Stetson Invitational golf tournament held at Victoria Hills Golf Club, November 7-9. More about this annual event in next month's edition of the Impact Report.

On the business development front, we are currently negotiating a return in 2011 for the Union Printers International baseball tournament. This first time event was held in Volusia County, using fields at Embry Riddle and Ormond Beach, July 25-20, 2010.

Learn more about this opportunity and some of our other new event initiatives, below in this month's impact report.

Have a great September!

IN THE PIPELINEPipeline

On the business development front, the Sports Commission recently conducted a site visit with USAV-Florida regarding the possibility of hosting a created event for college club teams from across the United States in early March of 2011.  Embry Riddle University would be the host site in the first year, but additional venues including the Ocean Center might be needed should the event grow in popularity.
Should the event dates work out for all involved, we hope to announce our partnership with USAV-Florida in next month's impact report.

During our meetings with USAV-Florida, we discussed the opportunity of bidding on a National High Level Performance Camp that would take place in late July of 2012, along with the Collegiate Club National Championships for early April of 2011.  Each of these events are owned and operated by USA Volleyball.  The Performance Camp would attract approximately 80 teams from across the United States
to Daytona Beach, with the Collegiate Club National Championships attracting over 250 volleyball teams to our community. Unfortunately, due to date availability and/or space limitations at the Ocean Center, we are not able to bid on either event opportunity. We will continue to explore opportunities with USA Volleyball and like event organizers that are good fits for Volusia County.

First, the Sports Commission recently sent representation to the USA Wrestling State Leaders Summit in Colorado Springs.  The goal of our visit was to meet with officials from USA Wrestling to discuss our venues for potential future event opportunities.  This trip coincides with our recent bid submission to host the 2011 and 2012 Cadet Duals Championship.  The Daytona Beach Ocean Center Exhibition Hall would serve as the host venue for this mid June event.  Approximately 2,000 youth athletes, coaches, officials and spectators are expected to be in attendance.  We expect to officially announce their intentions on coming to Daytona Beach shortly, so stay tuned.

As mentioned above, we are currently negotiating a return in 2011 for the Union Printers International Baseball Tournament. This was their first trip to Daytona Beach, where they utilized fields at Embry Riddle and Ormond Beach from July 25-20, 2010.  Next year's event would be around a similar timeframe, with event organizers looking to bring even more teams to Daytona Beach in 2011.  Should additional teams participate, one or more fields could be needed.  We hope to wrap up this process in the next month.

COMMUNITY PROFILECommunity

Last December 21, Bethune-Cookman University named Brian Jenkins its new head football coach. The past nine months have been a whirlwind for the new coach, his new staff, and for the new team they are preparing for this season. All the preparation came to fruition this past Saturday at Municipal Stadium, with the 2010 Wildcat football season opener, a 70-10 win over Edward Waters College. With this impressive performance, Bethune-Cookman leads the NCAA Football Championship Series Subdivision in total offense after the first week of the 2010 season. This was first of three straight home games in four weeks to open Jenkins' first season at B-CU. For the complete schedule of B-CU football games, as well as more information about their other sports programs, visit http://www.b-cuathletics.com/.
