At this time, the CFSC is still reviewing the bid paperwork distributed by USA Rugby for their 2011 events, and we will be working with our community partners to determine which events will fit best in Seminole County. Sylvan Lake Park and/or the Seminole Soccer Club are the potential host venues. We will have an update as to the status of these bids in next month's impact report. The CFSC is continuing to work with HOF Baseball to once again stage their high school baseball tournament here in Seminole County in spring of 2011. In the month when Oviedo native Nick May should be starting his senior year, he is gearing up for a season of professional soccer in Argentina! Nick has spent the better part of his recent soccer career traveling between Argentina and England. Following a couple successful stints in Argentina, the Queens Park Rangers, a well known team in London's Champion's league, took notice and invited May out to work with their youth academy directors, ultimately getting him the shot to start in one of their games. Due to work permit issues, May is back in Argentina playing for Estudiantes sharpening his game and working hard to impress European scouts. | SPECIAL RECOGNITION |
SportsTravel magazine has announced that the 2010 NCAA Division II Tennis Championships has been nominated for a 2010 SportsTravel Award. This event, hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission, Rollins College and Seminole County, was held at Sanlando Tennis Park in Altamonte Springs this past May. The event featured 16 men's and 16 women's teams from around the country competing for the NCAA DII National Championship.
As we mentioned in earlier Impact Reports, this event was the first NCAA "green" Championship. Team Seminole implemented a plan that included using recycled paper for event programs and tickets, recycling tennis balls through the "life of a tennis ball" program, separating and recycling water bottles, and much more.
"Since the location of the event is a major part of the criteria for being nominated, the people of Seminole County should take great pride in knowing that an event held in their community is being recognized for its excellence," said Timothy Schneider, publisher of SportsTravel magazine, which organizes the TEAMS Conference & Expo. Winners will be announced at the TEAMS '10 Conference & Expo, October 18-22, 2010, in Charlotte. |
