A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM
| |
Football is back! NFL pre-season started last weekend, college teams are currently in camp, and high schools begin practice this week. Both Warner Christian and DeLand look to make it back to the State Championship game at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Mainland, ranked 6th in Central Florida by the Orlando Sentinel, will kick off the season August 27th at Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium against national powerhouse West Point (Miss.) in the inaugural Gridiron Challenge. See below for more information about the Gridiron Challenge.
Switching gears, the paving process at the Daytona International Speedway continues this fall, expected to be complete by January 1st. Many of you may be wondering, just where does that leave the Daytona Beach Half Marathon? The popular race, in its third year, will be one of the only events held on DIS property this fall. The CFSC and Speedway have been working on several race routes that will give runners a true "race experience" while not being able to run on the actual track due to the repaving. Check out www.daytonabeachhalf.com for more information.
This past month our friendly and furry friends invaded Southwest Volusia County. More than 2,000 screaming kids and families (a near sellout) packed the Tommy Lawrence Arena at the Volusia County Fair and Expo Center on July 15th for the 18th Annual Celebrity Mascot Games. Click HERE for a quick video of our mascot halftime dance off.
As you know, our Volusia County Marketing Manager for the past six years, Jason Maderer, has resigned from the Sports Commission and started his new life and career in Atlanta this week with his fiancé. We are currently interviewing several great candidates, and by the time you receive next month's impact report, we will have our new Volusia County Manager in place. We are also continuing our strong focus on business development for Volusia County during this time of transition. Read more about our recent success, and more, below in this month's impact report. Have a great August! |

On the business development front, the Sports Commission is preparing a proposal that will hopefully attract a Mixed Martial Art State Championship to the Ocean Center next September. This event would attract approximately 300+ athletes from across the State of Florida to Daytona Beach for several days of competition.
In addition, the Sports Commission has been in discussions with USA Volleyball and USAV-Florida regarding the possibility of hosting two future national events in Daytona Beach. The first one would be a created event for college club teams from across the United States, and would take place in mid March of 2011. Sites being considered include the Ocean Center, Embry Riddle and Daytona State College. The other opportunity would be an existing event/national camp that would take place in late July of 2012. The proposed venue would be the Ocean Center Exhibition Hall and Arena.

Good news, as it appears that the Sports Commission's recent proposal to Florida Wrestling and USA Wrestling to host of the 2011 and 2012 Cadet Duals Championship as been accepted. The Daytona Beach Ocean Center would serve as the host venue for this mid June event. Approximately 2,000 youth athletes, coaches, officials and spectators are expected to be in attendance. We are simply ironing out minor details with all parties before we can officially announce the event has been awarded to our community. We expect to officially announce our "win" in next month's impact report.
In other exciting news, we have received notification from USA Sports Productions that we have been awarded the opportunity to stage the 2013 Judges Gymnastics Cup. Scheduled for the Ocean Center in January of 2013, the event is expected to attract approximately 1,600+ athletes, coaches, officials and spectators to Volusia County. More details to come in future impact reports.
