A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM |
The month of July saw action on the soccer fields, important discussion amongst the sports leaders of the county and new business being targeted for Lake County for 2011 and beyond. Fitting for a month which saw a world champion crowned in the World Cup, the sports action for July took place on the soccer pitch at Hickory Point. The Inaugural PAL 3 vs. 3 Challenge took place over the weekend of July 10th, and attracted more than 80 soccer teams of all ages to Tavares. Teams ranging from youth to adult took part in the tournament, which was the second event staged this summer as part of the PAL Summer Games series. In addition to being part of the PAL series, the 3 vs. 3 tournament also served as the last qualifier for the Challenge Sports 3 vs. 3 National Championship held at Walt Disney World's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex the last weekend in July. The Sports Commission congratulates all the teams that advanced down the road to Disney, and we look forward to having everyone back next summer for an even bigger tournament! Off the playing field, July brought with it the latest meeting of the Lake County Community Advisory Board. The Lake County CAB meets several times a year to discuss upcoming events and challenges within the Lake County sports landscape, and all interested parties are encouraged to attend. This month the Fairfield Inn and Suites of Clermont was our gracious host for our forum. Items discussed included the creation of more regional partnerships among venues, event organizers and municipalities, short and long term event goals and several other pertinent topics. The final CAB meeting of 2010 is tentatively scheduled for the last quarter of the year, and all those interested in attending are encouraged to contact Jon Baran, the Lake County Sports Marketing Manager, at jbaran@centralfloridasports.org. We look forward to seeing you all there. On the business development front, the Sports Commission submitted two bids this month for events in 2011 and 2012. You can read all about this and other potential events below in this month's impact report.
