In the midst of all the planning for these two events, the Sports Commission was pleased to support the East Coast Paddleboard Championships in Ponce Inlet this past weekend. Seventy-five athletes competed in this fast-growing event. Check out the article here. Even better, check out this video from the event!

IN THE PIPELINEPipeline

The Central Florida Sports Commission has just received a formal RFP from USA Volleyball regarding a new event: the 2012 Olympic Trials for Beach Volleyball. This willl be the first time the US will hold a qualifying tournament to determine who will represent our country at the London Summer Games. The event will be held in early July of 2012 and includes national television. We hope to to share more details on this possibility in a future impact report.

We have also have had talks with the organizers of the USA Bowl, a semi-pro football event scheduled for mid-January of 2011. The weekend features as many as eight games. Organizers have indicated they want to hold the USA Bowl at Daytona Beach's Municipal Stadium. The Sports Commission is working with city officials to determine if we can submit a bid.

Other events in the pipeline include the NAIA Annual Convention, NAIA Soccer National Championship, the 2013 Judges Cup (gymnastics) and the 2012 USA Wrestling Pan American Olympic Qualifier. Stay tuned!

The Sports Commission and Sunshine State Conference have been selected to host the 2013 NCAA Division II Women's Golf National Championship at LPGA International. The 12-team, 12-individual tournament will be held May 15-18, 2013. It will be the first NCAA National Championship at LPGA International since we welcomed the D-I Women's Finals in 2007.

The Sports Commission recently participated in a site visit with the Daytona Beach CVB for a new exciting event: the Warrior Dash Beach Series. After touring the Daytona Beach Bandshell and area around the pier, event organizers indicated they will bring the race to our community November 13. An official announcement is expected in August. The Warrior Dash race is expected to attract more than 6,000 runners. The 2-3 mile, day-long competition is held on the sand and features challenging obstacles and a huge post-race party.

The Sports Commision had submitted a proposal earlier this year for a traditional Warrior Dash event in West Volusia County. That possibility seems unlikely because of the new beach event.

The work is underway at Daytona International Speedway! Construction crews have started to remove the track as the Speedway begins work on the historic repaving project at the World Center of Racing. Former Daytona 500 champions Darrell and Michael Waltrip were at the Speedway Monday for the official (and literal) "groundbreaking." The project is expected to be complete by January 1st, just in time for Speedweeks..

The entire 2.5-mile track, skid pads, pit road and apron will be repaved. All of the existing asphalt will be removed down to the original 52-year old lime rock base. An estimated 50,000 tons of asphalt will be used on the project, paving more than 1.4-million square feet (about 33 acres). Keep updated on the project by visiting www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com/repave.
