A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

With our summer event season coming to an end, the Central Florida Sports Commission is now gearing up for a busy and exciting fall schedule of sports events in Orlando and Orange County.

First, we hope you will be joining us this week for the family event of the year, the Celebrity Mascot Games. Over 30 mascots from the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, and NCAA will take over the Amway Arena on July 16th and 17th. Stuff (Orlando Magic), Knightro (University of Central Florida), Captain Fear (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Albert (University of Florida) are a few of the mascots that will battle in gladiator themed games to determine the ultimate champions of the mascot world.  Proceeds of the event benefit New Hope for Kids, a wish granting organization for children with life threatening illnesses. We hope you will join in the fun!

Next, the Sports Commission hosted the USA Taekwondo Junior Olympics and Senior Nationals at the Orange County Convention Center. The weeklong event started on June 28th and ended on July 4th, and attracted over 3,500 athletes and 5,000 spectators to the Central Florida region. This marked the 4th time this event has been staged at the Convention Center.   Stay tuned until next month when we hope to share with you the economic impact results associated with this event. Click on the USA Taekwondo logo to watch exciting competition from the event.

As we look towards the fall, the sports calendar in Orange County and the City of Orlando appears full, with the return of the Florida High School Athletic Associations Boys & Girls Swimming & Diving State Championships and the Boys Football Finals. Read about these great events, and other potential fall events, in future impact reports.

IN THE PIPELINE

On the business development front, the Sports Commission has recently been in discussions with USA Wrestling and Florida Amateur Wrestling Association to host the 2012 Pan American Olympic Qualifier. This event would be televised both domestically and internationally, and would qualify athletes from countries such as the United States, Canada and Cuba for the 2012 Olympics.  If awarded, this prestigious event would attract over 1,200 athletes, coaches, administrators and spectators to Central Florida.  Venues under consideration for this event include the Amway Center, Orange County Convention Center and UCF Arena.

In addition, the Sports Commission is looking into the possibility of bidding on two (2) other national events, those being the 2011 USA Team Handball Club Nationals and 2012 USA Volleyball High Performance Camp.  The Club Nationals would be stage in mid May, and is contemplated for either Convention Center and/or area hotel ballrooms that have sufficient space to accommodate multiple sport courts.   The High Performance Camp is potentially earmarked for the Convention Center based on their overall space requirements, and would take place in late July of 2012.

The Sports Commission is currently working with the Orlando Titans and Amway Center to potentially bid on the 2011 National Lacrosse League's All-Star Game.  The game would be nationally televised, and would feature the top lacrosse players from throughout the league.  The game would take place in either March or April of next year.   Specific room night expectations and potential economic impact implications are still being evaluated.  Based on our initial diligence, we hope to forward a proposal by end of this summer.

In addition, the Sports Commission is working with the Orlando/Orange County Conventions & Visitors Bureau to evaluate the opportunity to host the 2012 - 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Men's & Women's Basketball Tournament.   The event would take place in early March, and would be contemplated for the new Amway Center.  As we continue to learn more about this opportunity, we will be sure to share additional details with you.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

With the world tuned in to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Andrea Rodriques is focused on the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup which will take place in Germany. As a junior, Andrea is a midfielder for the UCF Knights, but this summer she is competing for the Portuguese National Team.  Andrea owns passports for Brazil, Portugal and the United States. While her parents were born in Brazil, her paternal family was born in Portugal. The first stage for qualifiers of the Women's World Cup is the UEFA qualifying set which ends on August 25th.

In fact, Andrea continues a recent trend of UCF players, alums and/or coaches that have competed at the highest level for women's soccer. Junior goalkeeper, Aline Reis, participated in Brazil's National Team Camp in 2009. This follows the lead of UCF's head coach, Amanda Cromwell, who competed on the US National Team from 1991 - 1998. And let's not forget about the numerous accomplishments of Michelle Akers!
