A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM
|
Summer is here! We hope your June is off to a good, albeit very warm, start. Things are certainly heating up at Daytona International Speedway. The Coke Zero 400 is less than a month away (July 3). There are actually three races at the Speedway that weekend. The Nationwide Series races Friday night, July 2, and the Grand Am series competes on the road course just hours before Coke Zero 400.
Congratulations to Daytona State Women's Golf! The Lady Falcons won the national championship last month in their own backyard (more on that later). Also, congrats to Embry-Riddle and Bethune Cookman. The Eagles won the Sun Conference's top honor, the Commissioner's Cup, for the 11th straight year. The honor goes to the conference's top sports program. Embry won 11 of the Sun Conference's 15 regular season titles. Bethune-Cookman again won the MEAC Baseball Championship, the fifth in a row and the 10th title in the last 11 years.
Your Sports Commission hosted two events in May. The USA Taekwondo National Qualifier attracted more than 700 athletes, coaches, officials and spectators to Embry-Riddle on May 22-23. Next up for many of those athletes is the USA Taekwondo Junior Olympics, which will be staged at the Orange County Convention later this month (another CFSC event). The Let it Fly Flag Football World Championships were held at Embry-Riddle on Memorial Day weekend. The two-day event attracted 121 youth and adult teams from across the southeast. The World Championships were supported by the Daytona Beach Area CVB,and tournament organizers hope to return to Volusia County again next year.
We are also focused on business development for our community, and this month's Impact Report has more information on current possibilities for Volusia County. Also, keep an eye on your mailbox. The 18th annual Celebrity Mascot Games are scheduled for Thursday, July 15th at the Volusia County Fairgrounds. Invites will go out soon, and we hope you can join us for the family event of the summer!
Have a great June!

IN THE PIPELINE |
The Central Florida Sports Commission is working with US Lacrosse regarding the possibility of hosting events at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex in the spring and summer of 2011. The US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associations National Championships is a women's club team event scheduled each year for mid-May. The 2010 event was held in Scottsdale, Arizona and attracted more than 500 players. Another possible event is the U-15 National Championship Regional Qualifiers, a new tournament that would be held in either May or June of 2011. We expect to host a site visit for US Lacrosse officials next month.
Speaking of Ormond Beach, the Sports Commission and city officials recently met with Florida Travel Ball (FTB) organizers to discuss bringing more events to Volusia County. FTB has hosted several baseball events at the Sports Complex during the last two years (and just booked two more for this year: June 19-20 and July 24-25). Now FTB is expanding to youth softball and youth football. We will continue to keep you updated on FTB's plans in Volusia County.
Your Sports Commission also met with officials from Gridiron Promotions, which will host the inaugural Gridiron Challenge at Daytona Beach's Municipal Stadium this August. Four high school football games will be held August 27-28 on the stadium's new turf field. There are four teams from Florida (including Daytona Beach's Mainland High), two from Texas and one each from Mississippi and Georgia. The Gridiron Challenge will kick off the 2010 season.

An already very busy 2011 spring golf season might be getting even busier in Volusia County. The Sports Commission has already been selected to host the Atlantic Sun Women's Golf Championship (April 10-13, 2011) and the NCAA Division II Men's Regional (May 1-4, 2011) at Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand. Hopefully we can slip in a few more tee times in from April 23-26, 2011. That's because the Sports Commission has submitted a bid to host the Conference USA Men's Golf Championship on those dates (along with 2012). UCF would be our co-host and be one of 11 teams participating in the event. We should have a decision by mid-summer.
Those Victoria Hills events will be followed by the NCAA Division I Women's Golf East Regional which will be staged May 4-7, 2011 at LPGA International.

COMMUNITY PROFILE |
It took five years, but Daytona State is finally back on top of the college golf world. The Lady Falcons won the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship on May 21 at LPGA International. Laura Brown's team crushed the field, winning by 60 strokes for the 5th women's golf national title in school history. The last came in 2005.
2010 NJCAA Champions |
Daytona State's Mitsuki Katahira won the individual title with a three-round score of 211 (-5) on the Legends Course. That's the lowest overall score in NJCAA history. Katahira carded a 64 in round two. Congrats to Daytona State women's golf!
