The Central Florida Sports Commission, in partnership with the Seminole County Recreation Council, were proud to co-host the Seminole County High School Athletes & Hall of Fame Breakfast of Champions, presented by Bright House Sports Network on May 27th at the Lake Mary Events Center. This honorary breakfast recognized young athletes from Seminole County who have made significant achievements in their particular sport, and pay tribute to Seminole County Hall of Fame inductees for their success and contributions to sport. This first class event has become a tradition that places the spotlight on student athletes who have excelled in their sports, while balancing the books at the same time! Along with the high school student athletes recognized, the newly rejuvenated Seminole County Sports Hall of Fame welcomed in four (4) new members: Fred Tyler, Tom Farnsworth, Bill Buchalter and Schowonda Williams. Congratulations to all athletes and Hall of Fame Inductees.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM |
While another exciting season of championships comes to a close, your Sports Commission continues to look to the future as it relates future business development! First, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) made their triumphant return to Seminole County, and certainly made some history while being here. From May 12-15, Rollins College, the Central Florida Sports Commission and Seminole County Parks & Recreation co-hosted the 2010 NCAA Division II Men's & Women's Tennis Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs. A banquet at the Hilton in Altamonte Springs kicked off the week of festivities with some great food and a great message for all those playing in the Championship. Natalie Spilger, a professional soccer player and environmental advocate, addressed the crowd during the banquet stressing being balanced on and off the court, while at the same time, encouraging the student athletes to become Green. Her comments were part of the overall them of this year's event, one of the NCAA's first Green Championships. Overall this year's championship was a great success. Barry University out of South Florida took home the Men's National Team Championship, while Armstrong Atlantic out of Georgia brought home the Women's National Team Championship. This prestigious event once again serves as one of the shinning beacons as to the world class venues in Seminole County, along with the effectiveness of Team Seminole. We look forward to having the NCAA back in 2011 for another great championship week! To hear what Roberta Page, Championships Director from the NCAA, had to say about this year's event, please click the image to the right. On the business development front, the Sports Commission and Seminole County Convention & Visitors Bureau are in the process of evaluating a proposal for another exciting soccer event. Read all about it, and more, below in the Seminole County Impact Report. As always, please do not hesitate to call should you have any questions and we look forward to partnering with TEAM SEMINOLE to generate more great sports activity in Seminole County. |

| IN THE PIPELINE |
On the business development front, the Sports Commission has confirmed that the 2011 Florida Cup Soccer Tournament has tentatively agreed to return to Seminole County in March of 2011. Potential dates under consideration are either March 5 - 6 or 12 - 13, 2011. This event was staged at Sylvan Lake Park and Seminole Soccer Complex this past March and was responsible for generating 1,000 room nights in Seminole County. As we mentioned in last month's Impact Report, Florida Cup organizers are interested in creating several additional events that could be staged in Seminole County in 2011 and beyond! These events include a youth lacrosse training camp and a boys and girls soccer showcase. These events are still in the infancy stage; however we will keep you posted as the details evolve!

The Central Florida Sports Commission is still in a holding pattern waiting for the United State Adult Soccer Association to announce their decision regarding the placement of their annual Veteran's Cup.
The Veteran's Cup would draw between 90 - 110 men's & women's soccer teams from across the United States to the host venue for approximately 4 - 6 days of practice and competition. We have proposed hosting the event at both Sylvan Lake Park and the Seminole Soccer Complex in July of 2011 and 2012. The USASA has indicated that they will be making a decision no later than the end of June.
In addition, the Sports Commission and Seminole County Convention & Visitors Bureau are in discussions with the Elite Club National League (ECNL) with respect to hosting the 2010 ECNL National Girls Soccer Tournament. Scheduled for Dec 26 - 29, 2010, this event would potentially attract 120 - 180 youth soccer teams to Seminole County. Based on initial projections, this event could generate approximately 4,000 room nights. Stay tuned, as we hope to formally announce a decision by ECNL by the end of July. |
