A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

The month of May might have begun on the golf course, but it ended with celebrations on the softball diamond and in a ceremony honoring the best and brightest student athletes in Lake County.

After golf stole the show the first few weeks of the month, the CFSC welcomed the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) to Lake County for the first time. The Sports Commission, National Training Center and the Lake County Department of Tourism and Business Relations were honored to host the 2010 FHSAA Girls State Softball Championships in Clermont from May 10 - 15. Champions were crowned in all six (6) of FHSAA's softball classifications, including Pine Castle Christian Academy out of Orlando. If you missed this year's exciting games, have no fear, as the FHSAA will return to Lake County and the Legends Way Ball Fields next May as part of our multi-year agreement to host the Girls State Softball Championships.

Later this month the focus will once again shift to the links. A summer tradition for nearly four decades, the Mission Inn Resort will once again host their Florida Junior Boys and Girls Invitational. The top amateur golfers under 18 years of age from around the world will make their way to Howey-in-the-Hills to compete against the best of the best. This year's event will be held from June 30-July 2 and will feature both the Las Colinas and El Campeon courses. IN THE PIPELINE

On the business development front, the Sports Commission is in the process of reviewing several event opportunities with US Synchronized Swimming (USSS) in 2012. As previously reported, USSS will be bringing their 2011 Junior Championship to Clermont to the National Training Center next April, and we hope to keep them in Lake County for future years to come. Of the multiple events being reviewed, one we are particularly interested in is the US Open, an event that would bring approximately five hundred (500) athletes of all ages to South Lake for a week in mid July.

Also, the Sports Commission has begun preliminary discussions with the NCAA regarding bringing the Division III Women's Golf Championship back to Lake County on a long term basis. Based on the success of this year's event, the Sports Commission proposed making Mission Inn a permanent location for this event on annualized basis beginning in 2014. As always, we will keep you informed as we receive any updates regarding these and other event opportunities.

The Sports Commission has recently begun discussions with Florida Travel Ball Baseball with respect to extending our relationship with them for the fall of 2010 and spring of 2011.  Florida Travel Ball stages multiple youth baseball events annually within Lake County, many of which take place in Leesburg at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex, Pat Thomas Stadium and other area venues.  We hope to announce our new partnership with Florida Travel Ball in next month's Impact Report.

In addition, we were recently in discussions with 360 Sports Agency with respect to potentially hosting the USA Bowl National Football Championships.  Unfortunately, the Sports Commission was unable to submit a proposal on behalf of Lake based on the facility parameters required to host.  360 Sports Agency is desirous of a football venue (non high school venue) that seats a minimum of 5k - 10k seats, along with adjacent practice fields.

As always, the Sports Commission will continue to identify new sports related opportunities on behalf of Lake County.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

Founded in 2004, the Lake County Police Activities League is an independent non-profit corporation sponsored by the Lake County Sheriff's Office that is committed to "Cops Helping Kids". Their goal is to provide a youth crime prevention program that relies on educational, athletic and other recreational activities to cement a bond between police officers and the youth in our community. It is based on the conviction that young people, if they are reached early enough, can develop strong, positive attitudes towards police officers and the law.

Under the guidance of Sheriff Gary Boarders, Cpl. Thomas Brown and Sgt. Steve Stevenson, the Lake County PAL program has reached new heights in recent years. Their bicycle program, headed by Lou Rossi, has become one of the best youth cycling programs in the state. The biggest and brightest success story out of the program in recent years has to be the PAL Summer Games that was hosted in Lake County for the first time in the summer of 2009. The event was created from scratch by those involved in Lake County PAL, and is now an annual tradition that brings PAL athletes from several sports to the county each summer. This year's event will feature a bicycle event, martial arts tournament and a soccer tournament, all staged at several venues throughout Lake County.
