A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

Magic Playoff LogoDo you believe?

What a crazy few weeks it has been for the Orlando Magic! Most people gave up on the home team after the Celtics threw the Magic in an 0-3 hole last Saturday in the Eastern Conference Finals. Now Orlando is back and in Boston tonight with a chance to tie the series in Game 6! Game 7 would be (WILL BE!) Sunday here in Orlando. GO MAGIC!

In the meantime, have you seen the new arena lately? Check out a live camera of the Amway Center by clicking HERE. 10-10-10 is the grand opening!

Speaking of openings, check out opening night for the USSSA Pride - Orlando's own professional fast-pitch softball team. With a roster full of Olympic medalists, including Cat Osterman, the Pride open the season Memorial Day at the UCF Softball Complex. Visit www.usssapride.com for tickets and information.

As the school year draws to a close, the Central Florida Sports Commision is part of a new tradition in high school sports. The Sports Commission and the Bright House Sports Network have been hosting a series of breakfasts in each of our counties: Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia. The Bright House Sports Network Breakfast of Champions honors the top boys and girls athletes in each sport.

This weekend puts a wrap on a very busy month for the Sports Commission. All the info is below in the Community Sports Report. Have a safe Memorial Day weekend and a great June! And again, Go Magic!

     NCAA Tennis logo
Sanlando Park in Atlamonte Springs is Central Florida's premier hardcourt tennis facility. That's one reason why the NCAA has put Seminole County in its regular rotation for national championship sites. Seminole County hosted the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Finals May 12-15 for the third time in the last five years (and it will return in 2011). Thirty-two teams (16 men/16 women) competed at Sanlando. Armstrong Atlantic State won the women's title and Barry University took home the men's hardware.

    LADIES MONTH IN LAKE COUNTYArticle2

The streak has officially been extended in Lake County. The NCAA Division IIINCAA Golf logo Women's Golf National Championship was held at Mission Inn Resort & Club May 11-14. It's the 14th year in a row Mission Inn and the Sports Commission have hosted an NCAA regional or national golf championship. Methodist University won the title to extend a streak of its own---13 straight national titles! The event was supported by the Lake County Department of Tourism and Business Relations. The tournament comes back to Mission Inn next spring, extended our streak to 15 consecutive years.

Lake County was also the home of the FHSAA Softball State Finals May 10-15. Six state champs were crowned at the National Training Center in Clermont, including Pine Castle Christian in 2A. The NTC, Sports Commission and Lake County will host the event next May too.

    FHSAA IN ORLANDO, AGAINArticle3
    FHSAA logo
The FHSAA is based in Gainesville, but sometimes we think they should permanently locate to Central Florida. It would save on gas money. In addition to softball, our community also hosted the FHSAA Water Polo Boys and Girls State Finals this month. That event wrapped up on May 1st at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando. Bishop Moore's boys made the semifinals. Winter Park's girls fell short in the championship game.

That puts a wrap on a very successful school year in Central Florida. The CFSC hosted six FHSAA state finals: water polo, softball, lacrosse, tennis, football and swimming and diving.
