A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM
As the summer begins to heat up, the Central Florida Sports Commission finds itself preparing for a summer and fall of exciting sports events, while also focusing on new business development on the behalf of Orange County and the City of Orlando.
First, the Central Florida Sports Commission, in partnership with West Orange High School, co-hosted the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Lacrosse State Championships in Winter Garden. Over 3,000 spectators cheered on the state's very best boy's and girl's lacrosse team competing for the state titles, including Lake Brantley and Winter Springs High schools. Vero Beach High School captured the coveted girl's state championship, while St. Andrew's High School took home the boy's state title. The Sports Commission, along with West Orange High School, will again host the finals in 2011 as part of our multiple year agreement with the Florida High School Athletic Association. We would like to congratulate Lake Brantley and Winter Springs High School for their outstanding seasons.
Next, the Sports Commission, in partnership with Dr. Philips High School, co-hosted the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Water Polo State Championships at the YMCA Aquatic Center on April 30 - May 1. Local favorites Oviedo, Lake Brantley and Winter Park High Schools were among the state's best boys and girl's teams competing for state titles in front of over 1,000 spectators. The Ransom Everglades captured the girl's state championship for the 2nd year in a row, while St. Andrew's took home the boy's state title. The Sports Commission and Dr. Philips High School will co-host the Water Polo Championships again in 2011, and we hope our partners in Dr. Phillips will have both their boys and girls competing in the state championships next year.
How about the Titans and the Magic? The Orlando Titans closed out a fantastic inaugural season in Orlando and we look forward to many more successful seasons in the future. And, of course, the Orlando Magic continues to pursue the NBA Championship while closing out the Amway Arena. Good luck, Magic! Speaking of the NBA, thanks and congrats to the Magic for bringing the 2012 NBA All-Star game to Orlando and Central Florida!
Finally, on the business development front, the Sports Commission recently submitted, amongst many others, a bid to bring the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament to the Amway Center in 2015. Read all about it, and other recent business development initiatives, below.

| IN THE PIPELINE | |
On the business development front, the Sports Commission recently sent several staff members to the 2010 National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Sports Event Symposium in Columbus, Ohio. This annual conference provides great opportunities for the Sports Commissions to network with multiple event organizers and identify new event opportunities.
Based on our meetings at NASC, we are currently reviewing the possibility of hosting multiple events with US Lacrosse, 360 Flag Football, NCAA, US Fencing and Pan American Dragon Boat Federation; just to name a few. In addition, the Sports Commission is working with UCF to evaluate a RFP to potentially bid on the Conference USA (CUSA) Men's Basketball Tournament for the Amway Center or the UCF Arena. The CUSA Men's Tournament would be staged in mid March from 2011 - 2014, with twelve (12) teams participating in the event. UCF, Memphis, Eastern Carolina, Tulane and Tulsa are a few of the schools that would participate in the event. We will keep you posted on the progress made with this bid opportunity.

The Sports Commission and Orlando Venues recently submitted a proposal to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) to host the 2015 SEC Men's Basketball Tournament at the new Amway Center. The event would be staged in mid March, and would draw the likes of UF, LSU, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia to Orlando for four (4) days of high level basketball. A recent study from the Nashville Sports Council, a previous host of the event, estimated the event generated over $18 million in economic impact and over 14,000 room nights in 2010. Special thanks to each of our community partners for their support of our bid. We expect to hear something from the SEC over the summer, so stay tuned.

It's a strike! Winter Park High School's Nate Winters recently returned to the ball field from losing his left leg two years ago from a boating accident. Nate started his remarkable comeback with a strike and went four-plus innings allowing one unearned run, one hit and striking out two. In August of 2008, Winters was hit by a boat which left his left leg amputated above the knee, along with severe damage to his right Achilles' tendon. Winters had nine surgeries and now uses a prosthetic leg, specifically designed for snowboarders, which allows for more rotation and flexibility. We salute Nate for his courage and perseverance in making his triumphant return to the diamond. |
