A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM |
As the weather heats up, so is the action in Seminole County! The month of April was a busy one for the Sports Commission as we welcomed back two (2) important event organizers to Seminole County. First, USA Rugby made their return to Seminole Soccer on April 16th - 18th for the Collegiate Division I & II Men's & Women's Playoffs. Staged at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford, 42 teams from across the United States converged on our community for three (3) days of training and competition. A spot to compete in the National Championships at Stanford University was on the line for each of the teams in attendance. The marks the 2nd year in a row the Division I and II Collegiate Playoffs were staged at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
Without wasting any time, the Sports Commission, in partnership with the Seminole County Parks & Recreation Department, co-hosted for the third consecutive year the Florida State High School 1A and 2A Boy's and Girl's High School Tennis Championships from April 26 - 30 . With the support of a dedicated Seminole County staff, the Sports Commission was able to conduct this 32 team event by utilizing both Sylvan Lake Park and Redbug Lake Park. Based on initial reports, many of the 32 participating teams were from outside of Central Florida area, with most utilizing hotel properties within Seminole County. This year's event was once again a tremendous success, and we look forward to welcoming the FHSAA back to Seminole County next April as part of our four (4) year partnership. As always, please do not hesitate to call should you have any questions and we look forward to partnering with TEAM SEMINOLE to generate more great sports activity in Seminole County. |

| IN THE PIPELINE |
On the business development front, the Sports Commission recently sent several staff members to the 2010 National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Sports Event Symposium in Columbus, Ohio. This annual conference provides great opportunities for the Sports Commissions to network with multiple event organizers and identify new event opportunities for Seminole County. Based on our meetings at NASC, we are currently reviewing the possibility of hosting multiple events with Red Frog Events, Amateur Athletics Union, US Lacrosse and 360 Flag Football; just to name a few.
In addition, the CFSC recently met with Florida Cup staff to discuss the opportunity to bring back the Florida Cup Soccer Tournament to Seminole County in March of 2011. With the success of the event this past March, Florida Cup representatives are interested in bringing the event back to Sylvan Lake Park and Seminole Soccer Complex for future years. In addition to the Florida Cup, Florida Cup organizers are interested in created several additional events that could be staged in Seminole County in 2011! Events under consideration include a youth lacrosse training camp and a boys and girls soccer showcase. We will keep you posted as details emerge!

The Central Florida Sports Commission, in partnership with the Seminole County CVB, submitted a bid to host the 2011 & 2012 United States Adult Soccer Association's (USASA) Veteran's Cup. You may recognize the name USASA, as we hosted their National Cup Soccer Championships at Sylvan Lake Park in July of 2009. The Veteran's Cup would draw between 90 - 110 men's & women's teams from across the United States to the host venue for approximately 4 - 6 days of practice and competition. We have proposed hosting the event at both Sylvan Lake Park and the Seminole Soccer Complex in July of 2011 and 2012. Initial estimates have the event generating 3,000+ room nights for the host community. Event organizers are scheduled to announce their site selection this June. We hope to report good news in a future Impact Report, so stay tuned! |
