 FEATURED ARTICLE

The Central Florida Sports Commission, in partnership with the Seminole County Recreation Council and the Bright House Sports Network, is proud to present the Seminole County High School Athletes & Hall of Fame Breakfast of Champions.  This honorary breakfast will take the opportunity to recognize young athletes from Seminole County who have made significant achievements in their particular sport, and pay tribute to Seminole County Hall of Fame inductees for their success and contributions to sport.  This first class event has become a tradition that places the spotlight on student athletes who have excelled in their sports while balancing balls and books! Speakers scheduled to attend include Dede Shaffner, Vice Chair of the Seminole County School Board, and Bill Buchalter.  This breakfast will take place at the Lake Mary Events Center on May 27th, 2010.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

Sunny days are here again, and so is another spring championship season!

First, USA Rugby is preparing to move into town for a weekend of intense competition at the Seminole Soccer Complex.  Forty college teams from across the United States will be arriving in Seminole County for a practice day on Friday the 16th in preparation for the USA Rugby Men's & Women'sCollegiate Playoffs which will be held on Saturday and Sunday.  This is the second consecutive year that this event is being held in Seminole County at the Seminole Soccer Complex.  We expect approximately 1,600 room nights to be generated from the event, with an estimated 2,000+ participants, coaches, spectators and officials to visit Seminole County over the course of the event.  USA Rugby has been a great partner with Seminole County and the Central Florida Sports Commission and we hope to deepen the relationship with them moving forward with the goal of hosting additional events.

Once the hard hitting excitement of rugby is completed, the FHSAA's hard hitting tennis players will be serving up some action throughout Seminole County during the 1A, 2A, 3A & 4A FHSAA Boys & Girls State Championships. Sanlando Park, Sylvan Lake Park and Red Bug Lake Park will be the host sites for these matches between the state's top tennis players the last week of April.  We are confident that Seminole County Leisure Services, the USTA member organization of the year, will once again have their venues in top shape for this great event.

As always, please do not hesitate to call should you have any questions and we look forward to partnering with TEAM SEMINOLE to generate more great sports activity in Seminole County.

Best Regards,
Sam Stark

IN THE PIPELINE

The Sports Commission will be sending multiple staff to the 2010 National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Sports Event Symposium in Columbus, Ohio on April 13 - 15.  This annual conference will provide a great opportunity for the Sports Commission to network with multiple eventorganizers and identify new event opportunities for hotels and sports venues within Seminole County.  A short list of targeted event organizers that we expect to be in attendance include the NCAA, US Lacrosse, AAU, Triple Crown Sports and FLW Outdoors; just to name a few.

In addition, the Sports Commission continues evaluating several event opportunities for late this fall and next year including the return of the Florida Cup (March of 2011) with US Club Soccer, Veterans Cup (June/July of 2011) with USASA and Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (multiple events).  Stay tuned as we hope to submit proposals for each in the coming months.

The CFSC is still in the preliminary planning stages for hosting a new boy's lacrosse tournament in Seminole County this coming fall.   The Crank the Rock Classic would be staged at Sylvan Lake Park in Sanford the first weekend in November.  This event is expected to attract 20 - 30 youth club lacrosse teams in its first year, hopefully growing in subsequent years. We hope to begin inviting teams throughout the Southeast this coming summer once the fall lacrosse event schedule becomes finalized.

In addition, the Sports Commission recently looked into an opportunity to be the host for the 2011 Boys and Girls Score at the Shore Soccer Tournament.  Unfortunately, the timing of the event would not work in Seminole County due to the fact the Daytona 500 in Volusia County occupies many of the hotel rooms in the county that would be needed to accommodate participating teams.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

Over the past 25 years, Seminole County has become one of the top destinations within the United States and State of Florida for hosting tennis tournaments.  It is no secret that Seminole County Leisure Services has a great team in place running their parks to ensure that their facilities are alwaysin great shape for the elite competitions that constantly takes place at each.  But behind every team there tends to be one person that drives everyone else.  In the tennis world of Seminole County, Cindy Harkins is that driving force.  "Cindy is our life-blood in tennis" said Joe Able director of leisure services, "she has taken us to where we are".  Cindy's vision, dedication and leadership in Seminole County has provided the Sports Commission the opportunity to bid on and stage multiple NCAA National Championships, State High School Championships and USTA Junior and Adult Tournaments; just to name a few.

Not only was Seminole County Leisure Services the 2009 USTA Florida's Member Organization of the Year, but Cindy Harkins was personally recognized as the USTA Florida's Female Merit Award Winner.  The Sports Commission would like to congratulate both Seminole County Leisure Services and especially Cindy Harkins on these prestigious awards!  They are well deserved!
