A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

With the spring season now upon us, the Central Florida Sports Commission finds itself hard at work as we continue our planning for several high school state championships and our 2nd powerlifting event of 2010. At the same time, we are diligently identifying and evaluating multiple event opportunities on behalf of Orange County and the City of Orlando.

First, the Central Florida Sports Commission, in partnership with USAPowerlifting-Florida, co-hosted the 10thAnnual IPF World Masters Bench Press Championships (March 30 - April 3) at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Orlando International Airport.  The event attracted 225 athletes from over 30 countries and 6 continents to Central Florida. This was the first time this event was staged in our community.  On the heels of the World Masters Championships, the 2010 National Collegiate Powerlifting Championships will come to the Hyatt on April 16 - 18.   Over 200+ athletes from across the United States are expected to be in attendance.

Coming up in late April and early May are the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Boys & Girls Lacrosse Championships and Boys & Girls Water Polo Championships.  The Lacrosse Championships will be staged at West Orange High School, with the Water Polo Championships being held at the YMCA Aquatic Center.  We look forward to sharing the results of each in next month's impact report.

Thank you for your continued support, as we continue to market Orlando and Orange County as the "Ultimate Sports Destination".

Best Regards,
Sam Stark

IN THE PIPELINE

On the new business front, the Central Florida Sports Commission, in conjunction with officials from the City of Orlando, Orlando Magic and Stetson University, recently returned from Indianapolis where they meet with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The purpose of this trip was to educate key decision makers on our new Amway Center and to identify and discuss future event opportunities for the new venue.

In addition, the Sports Commission will be sending multiple staff to the 2010 National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Sports Event Symposium in Columbus, Ohio on April 13 - 15.  This annual conference will provide a great opportunity for the Sports Commission to network with multiple event organizers and identify new event opportunities for hotels and sports venues within Orange County and the City of Orlando.  A short list of targeted event organizers that we expect to be in attendance include USA Volleyball, USA Gymnastics, the NCAA, USA Fencing and USA Synchronized Swimming; just to name a few.

The Sports Commission recently hosted site visits with KICK International in hopes of hosting one of their several statewide or national mixed martial events in fall of 2010, or multiple dates in 2011.  Several options were under consideration by KICK International and it appears that they have decided to stage their 2010 National Championship this coming October in Orange County at Disney' Coronado Springs Resort.  Specific details, including dates, to be provided in next month's impact report.

In addition, the Sports Commission recently hosted a site visit Winter Guard International (WGI) for the opportunity to stage the 2011 WGI Color Guard National Championships in Central Florida.  Venues toured and/or under consideration include the UCF Arena, ESPN Wide World of Sports and Amway Center. The Color Guard National Championships would attract an estimated 6,000 - 8,000 participants, along with approximately 6,000 spectators to our community over the course of 3 days next March or April.  We hope to be able to submit a formal proposal to WGI in April, so stay tuned!
