A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

Spring has finally sprung in Central Florida, and the Sports Commission is ready to head outside for a busy season of sports events in Lake County.

First, the Mission Inn Resort and Club played host to the first Sports Commission event of the new season with the Inaugural St. John's Spring Fling Men's and Women's Invitational. St. John's University, out of Queens, NY, has co-hosted a fall tournament atSTJU the Resort for the last three years and this was their first foray into a spring tournament in Central Florida. In a field dominated by Division I programs, Division II St. Leo's came away with the men's title. On the women's side, Butler began the most celebrated month in their university's history by coming away with the tournament title. Please click here or the picture above to watch some clips for the event.

Coming in late April, the action will move north in the county, but stay on the links, as Conference USA brings their men's golf championship to the RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento. Local co-host and defending conference champions University of Central Florida will be back to defend their crown. The tournament will be co-hosted by the Lake County Department of Tourism and Business Relations.

The month of April will conclude back at the Mission Inn Resort and Club with the Atlantic 10 Men's Conference Championship. For the second year in a row, the Atlantic 10 will finish their men's golf season in Lake County, with an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regional at stake for the teams.  Last year's conference champ UNC-Charlotte is again the favorite heading into the finals.

We invite all of you out to watch these exciting events in person as we continue our exciting and action packed spring season.

Best Regards,
Sam Stark

Last held in Clermont in 2008, the Junior Championships will bring approximately 400 of the best 18 and under synchronized swimmers to Lake County for four days of competition. As mentioned above, several other events from US Synchro are currently under review and we will keep you informed on the progress of these bids.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

The Montverde Academy Eagles wrapped another successful season last weekend at the ESPN Rise National High School Invitational basketball tournament in Baltimore, MD. The top seeded Eagles advanced all the way to the finals before falling in a close game to Nevada's Findlay Prep.

Since head coach Kevin Sutton took over the team seven (7) seasons ago, Montverde has been a dominant force in high school basketball, compiling a record of 164-29 in that time span. With five players from this year's squad headed to NCAA Division I basketball programs, it's no surprise that this team was one of the schools best. Leading the way all season for the Eagles were seniors James Bell and Jamail Jones, headed to Villanova and Marquette, respectively. Also moving on to Division I programs are seniors Haukur Palsson (Maryland), Ugo Okam (Harvard) and Papa Samba Ndao (Boston College).

We extend our congratulations to the Eagles, and we look forward to cheering you on in the 2010-2011 season!
