The Central Florida Sports Commission is preparing to start another annual tradition: the Bright House Sports Network Breakfast of Champions. The awards program will honor Volusia County's top high school athletes in each sport. A panel of local sports reporters, county administrators and committee members will nominate and select the winners. Similar awards breakfasts will also be held at the end of the school year in Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties.
The Volusia County Breakfast of Champions will be held on Friday, May 28 at the Daytona Beach Resort and Conference Center. We'll have more information on the event in next month's impact report.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

Welcome to spring, Volusia County! It finally feels like it, and just in time for the return of pro golf. The LPGA's Developmental Tour, the Duramed FUTURES Tour, is teeing it up through Sunday at LPGA International's Champions Course. Daily tickets for the Daytona Beach Invitational are only $10 for adults, and kids age 15 and under are free with a paying adult. Check it out! After all, that OTHER golf tourney is only on TV in the afternoons.
We expect that April will be another great month for the Sports Commission in Volusia County. We have three events coming up in the next few weeks. The Atlantic Sun Women's Golf Championship is this Sunday-Wednesday at New Smyrna Beach's Venetian Bay Golf Club. Ten teams, including co-host Stetson, will play. Then on the following Wednesday-Saturday, we'll move down Highway 44 to Stetson's campus to co-host the A-Sun Men's and Women's Tennis Championships. Twelve schools will be in town for the event, which is sponsored by the West Volusia Tourism Bureau. Finally, on April 17-18, youth baseball teams from around the state will arrive at both the Ormond Beach Sports Complex and the Nova Complex for two USSSA/Florida Travel Ball events.
In addition, the Sports Commission is proud to have played an active role in staging the USA Gymnastics Trampoline and Tumbling Pan American Championships on March 23-27 at the Ocean Center. The event attracted more than 300 athletes from around the Western Hemisphere (USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and
Puerto Rico). These young athletes were truly amazing!
Below is the latest Volusia County Impact Report, which has more information on what the Sports Commission is currently pursuing on behalf of our community. We hope you have a great month...and thank you again for all of your support!

IN THE PIPELINE | |
The Sports Commission has been focused as of late on developing new sports-business opportunities on behalf of Volusia County. We recently hosted a site visit with Kick International, a martial arts and grappling organization. Kick is looking for sites to host several adult and youth championships in 2010 and 2011. Based on their request, we visited the Hilton, Plaza Resort & Spa, Ocean Center and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
While the Sports Commission already hosts the annual Daytona Beach Half Marathon at the Daytona International Speedway, we are currently evaluating Warrior Dash, a racing series that is gaining in popularity across the nation. Warrior Dash races are 3-4 miles long and typically run through woods, but with a few twists. Like mud pits, fire pits and even old cars. Check it out HERE. We're looking at a few areas on both sides of the county for 2011.
At the same time, the CFSC is also exploring sites for a proposed middle school cross country state championship to be staged in October or November of 2010 or 2011. West Volusia County and the Daytona Beach area are currently under consideration.
Lastly, the Sports Commission recently submitted letter of interest to USA Volleyball for the opportunity to be considered a host of the 2012 USA Volleyball Beach Volleyball Olympic Trials. This first-time event would be nationally televised and qualify teams/athletes for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Details are still very preliminary, but we hope to share more information with you when it comes available.

The Central Florida Sports Commission has submitted a proposal to Florida Wrestling and USA Wrestling to be the host of the 2011 and 2012 Cadet Duals Championship. If selected, the Daytona Beach Ocean Center would welcome approximately 2,000 youth athletes, coaches, officials and spectators each June.
In the meantime, the Sports Commission recently looked into an opportunity to be the host for the 2011 Boys and Girls Score at the Shore Soccer Tournament. Unfortunately, due to facility restrictions and availability of dates, we had to pass on the event for 2011. Also, because of those same issues, we were not able to bid on two USA Volleyball national events for the Ocean Center: 2010 High Performance Championship and the 2011 Club Championships.
