A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

Hello Seminole County and hello spring!  Well, it seems that the frigid winter of 2010 is over, and warmer weather is rolling into town just in time for some exciting spring championships in Seminole County.

As we mentioned in our last newsletter, US Club Soccer's Florida Cup held their annual tournament this past weekend at Sylvan Lake Park and the Seminole Soccer Complex.  Eighty-six (86) teams registered for this past weekend's tournament, with only approximately 16 teams participating from the local
community.  We expect and hope local hotels and restaurants greatly benefitted from the presence of these youth teams and their families staying in Seminole County.  Please click the image to the right to see and hear from the event organizer about their experience in Seminole County.

As we look towards April and May, several marquee tennis championships are right around the corner in Seminole County.  The top high school boys and girls tennis player from around the State of Florida will be coming to Seminole April 26-30 for the FHSAA 1A and 2A State Championships.  Competition will be taking place all week at Sylvan Lake Park, Sanlando Tennis Park, and Red Bug Park.  Shortly after the high school teams head out of town, the NCAA will send in the top Division II men's & women's tennis teams to Seminole County for the NCAA Division II Men's & Women's Tennis National Championships!  The Sports Commission is proud to be working in partnership with the NCAA, Seminole County CVB, and Seminole County Leisure Services in making this year's DII Tennis Championship one of the first "green" tournaments.  Each group is developing ideas in which we can conserve energy and reduce waste.  We look forward to serving as an example for other sports events staged throughout the United States!  Stay tuned to next month's newsletter to for the details as they come available.

As always, please do not hesitate to call should you have any questions and we look forward to partnering with TEAM SEMINOLE to generate more great sports activity in Seminole County.

IN THE PIPELINE

The Sports Commission has been exploring opportunities with new event organizers that would be able to utilize the great venues we have in Seminole County.  We have been recently in discussions with US Youth Soccer, World Flying Disc Federation (Frisbee Golf and Ultimate Frisbee) and Middle
School Sports Association (Cross Country).  We are currently waiting to receive RFP's for future events with these organizations, and official bids will follow where appropriate.

In addition, the Sports Commission is also in the planning stages of creating a boy's lacrosse tournament which would be held in Seminole County in November of 2010.   This new event, the "Crank the Rock Classic", will potentially be staged at Sylvan Lake Park and/or Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford.  This event is expected to attract 20 - 30 youth club lacrosse teams in its first year, hopefully growing in subsequent years.

In addition, we recently met with Rollins College and Central Florida Youth Football League regarding the opportunity to stage two (2) created events this coming fall.  The event with Rollins College would be created Girls High School and Collegiate Division II/III Showcase that would be staged at either Sylvan Lake Park or Seminole Soccer Club in October of 2010.   The other event would be staged in conjunction with the Central Florida Youth Football League, which would be a youth tackle football invitational.  Facilities under consideration include Sylvan Lake Park and area parks.  We hope to have more details for each opportunity in coming impact reports.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
Special congratulations this month is dedicated to the Lake Mary Girls Basketball team.  Earlier this month the girls captured the FHSAA 6A State Championship.  The win over Miami Lourdes capped off what proved to be a very exciting playoff run for the
Rams from Lake Mary!  Late game heroics such as buzzer beating 3-pointers from Morgan Jones earlier in the playoffs helped boost Lake Mary into their championship bout against Miami Lourdes High School in Lakeland at the Lakeland Center.    What ended up being a victory for Lake Mary was not so certain late in the fourth quarter when Miami closed the gap to one point with mere minutes remaining in the game.  Ultimately the Rams held off the final push from Miami to gain the title of 6A state champions.

From all of us here at the Central Florida Sports Commission, we would like to congratulate the Lake Mary Girls Basketball team on bringing another FHSAA state championship title to Seminole County!
