TigerShark Endurance Events has quickly become the leader in triathlons within Volusia County. Rob Wallace and his team will host a very special triathlon in Daytona Beach Shores on Sunday, March 21. The Daytona Frogman is an Olympic distance triathlon (1500 meter ocean swim, 40K bike and a 10K run). What makes it so unique is that 100% of the net proceeds for this first-year event will be donated to the Naval Special Warfare Foundation. More than 250 athletes are expected. Registration is still open here.
TigerShark holds a series of triathlons each summer and also organizes several running races throughout the year. Rob is a Volusia County resident, a former employee of the County's Beach Patrol Department and a certified USA Triathlon Race Director. Learn more about TigerShark here.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM
|
|
Good afternoon, Volusia County. It appears that Bike Week 2010 was a success! Congratulations to the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce for again organizing this outstanding annual event for our community. From the races at the Speedway, to the special events on Main Street, to the impact felt throughout the county and all of Central Florida, we are proud to be the home of Bike Week!
Now it's time for March Madness, and Embry-Riddle is right in the middle of it. The men's basketball team is in Missouri right now for the NAIA Division II National Championship. The Eagles beat Evergreen State College this afternoon 80-78 in the round of 32. Steve Ridder's team is four wins away from a national championship and plays again Friday morning. Go Eagles!
And don't forget about Bethune-Cookman. The women are alive at their MEAC tournament. A championship means a spot in the Big Dance.
Elsewhere around the county (and just in time for the warmer weather), Ormond Beach Sports Complex is hosting nearly 20 teams at the annual Florida All-Star College Baseball Jamboree through March 20. An exciting, new triathlon will be held in Daytona Beach Shores later this month (see our Featured Article for more info). And the Duramed Futures Tour will return to LPGA International in a few short weeks. The future stars of the LPGA Tour will play the Daytona Beach Invitational April 9-11.
It has been a busy first two months of 2010 for your Sports Commission. Check out all the info below in our latest Volusia County Impact Report. Thank you for all of your support!

IN THE PIPELINE |
The Central Florida Sports Commission is in the preliminary planning stages for hosting a boys lacrosse tournament on July 24 - 25 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. The Battle at the Beach is expected to attract 30 - 40 teams from across the Southeast to compete in this inaugural event. Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing high school sports. We are putting the final touches on registration sheets, logos and a webpage, and will update you next month on this created event.
In addition, the Sports Commission is preparing to play an operational role in this month's USA Gymnastics Trampoline and Tumbling Pan American Championships at the Ocean Center. The event will be held March 24-27 for the first time in Daytona Beach. More than 300 competitors from six countries (USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Mexico) will compete.
On the business development front, the Sports Commission is preparing a proposal that will hopefully attract an international Mixed Martial Arts National Championship to the Ocean Center this coming October 29. The event would attract approximately 700-1,000 athletes to Daytona Beach. Other events in the pipeline include a possible trampoline and tumbling championship in 2012 (Daytona Beach), the 2011 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship (DeLand) and a created youth football championship this coming November in Deltona. |

Bids Submitted -4

The Central Florida Sports Commission and the Sunshine State Conference have been selected to host the 2011 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Regional at DeLand's Victoria Hills Golf Club. The four-day event will be held May 1-4, and will attract 108 golfers from around the nation (21 teams, 3 individuals) to West Volusia County. The Sports Commission and Stetson learned several months ago that we will host the Division I Women's East Regional at LPGA International next May 4-7, making May of 2011 a very busy one for college golf in Volusia County.
Hopefully it's only the beginning. Last month, we submitted two additional golf bids to the NCAA:
2012 NCAA D-II Men's Golf Nat'l Championship at Victoria Hills (108 players)
2013 NCAA D-II Women's Golf Nat'l Championship at LPGA Int'l (72 players)
We will keep you updated on these possibilities as more information becomes available.
As we told you last month, the CFSC teamed with the Ocean Center and the Daytona Beach Area CVB on a proposal that would have brought the 2010 US Fencing Junior/Cadet/Y14 & Junior Team North American Cup (2,000 spectators, coaches and spectators) to Daytona Beach this November. Unfortunately US Fencing has awarded the event to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. According to the event organizers, Daytona Beach was not selected due to the size of the Daytona Beach International Airport and concerns about transportation costs for attendees who might have chosen to fly into Orlando. |

COMMUNITY PROFILE |
|
USTA Florida Section is beginning its ninth year at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach. The 24-court facility will host 13 adult and youth league events this year and seven additional championships. Nearly 7,000 players are expected to compete. USTA Florida has hosted at least 10 events every year since arriving in our community in 2002, and this year's expected participation is the largest to date.
USTA Florida relocated to Daytona Beach through the efforts of the Central Florida Sports Commission and the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce. Doug Booth is the Executive Director. He oversees a staff of 25 people, as well as more than 600 volunteers around the state.
USTA Florida is a very important, and often overlooked, member of our community. Nearly 90% of participants for every event travel to Daytona Beach from out of town. Last year alone, 15 events were held at the Florida Tennis Center. They generated more than $7.5 million in direct economic impact and approximately 23,000 room nights for Volusia County. The next event is the Tennis on Campus Battle of the Southeast on March 20-21 at the Florida Tennis Center.
