A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

As an unseasonably cold winter begins to come to an end, the Central Florida Sports Commission finds itself hard at work preparing for several upcoming high school state championships, while still pursuing multiple event opportunities on behalf of our partners.

First, the Central Florida Sports Commission, in partnership with West Orange High School, is in the final planning stages for co-hosting the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) State Lacrosse Championships on April 23rd-24th. This will mark the 3rd year that the finals will attract the state's top four (4) boy's and girl's lacrosse teams to Winter Garden. The two (2) day competition will attract approximately 2,500 spectators to our region. Stay tuned to see who is crowned state championships at this year's event!

Just after the Lacrosse Championships, the Sports Commission will team up with Dr. Phillips High School and co-host the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) State Water Polo Championships. The top boy's and girl's water polo teams from across the State of Florida will converge on the YMCA Aquatic Center on April 30 - May 1 for state bragging rights. This marks the 2nd consecutive year this event will be staged in Orlando.

As you can see, we have a busy couple of months coming up and we look forward to sharing the results of each of the aforementioned events, along with those taking place in late March and early April, in future impact reports. Thank you for your continued support, as we continue to market Orlando and Orange County as the "Ultimate Sports Destination".

Best Regards,
Sam Stark

IN THE PIPELINE

On the business development front, the Sports Commission is continually researching new sport opportunities on behalf of Orange County and the City of Orlando. Event opportunities that are being reviewed include national boys and girls events with US Lacrosse, along with several national coaches clinics. Moreover, Amateur Disc Golf Championships, BMX (Bicycle) National and Regional Championships and Beach Tennis Championships are currently being evaluated for area parks facilities.

In addition, the Sports Commission has set up some future site visits with Winter Guard International (Color Guard) with respect to hosting the 2011 Winter Guard International World Championships. Venues being considered for this event include the new Amway Center, UCF Arena and the ESPN Wide of Sports Complex. More information relative to this opportunity will be provided in next month's impact report.

Based on our recent diligence in evaluating several event opportunities, the Sports Commission was unable to submit a proposal to host the 2011 and 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference fall and spring festivals.  The primary reason was not having the prerequisite facilities in close proximity to each other which are necessary for hosting.  In addition, we were unable to submit a proposal to host the 2010 and 2011 FHSAA Boys Volleyball Championships based on several challenges in staging the event.  Those obstacles include meeting the financial and venue requirements.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

Boys High School basketball in Central Florida captured a historic win recently when two (2) high schools in Orange County, Orlando Christian Prep and Winter Park, took home state basketball championships at the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Boys Basketball State Championships. Orlando Christian Prep defended their title by winning their third straight 1A state championship by defeating Jacksonville Arlington Country Day. Winter Park followed their lead by taking home the 6A title with a 76 - 57 victory over Metro Conference rival Dr. Philips. This marks the first time Orange County has had two (2) state boys basketball champions in the tournament that dates back to 1922.  We congratulate both Orlando Christian Prep and Winter Park High School for their accomplishment.
