A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SAM

Video of Sam's MessageHappy New Year! I'm sure you've already noticed, but 2010 looks a little different for the Central Florida Sports Commission. We have a new logo and this replaces our month Activity Letter many of you have received through the years. This new electronic, interactive report provides more information and features as the Sports Commission continues to brand Volusia County as a great sports destination. Expect to receive this report in the middle of each month.

2010 promises to be a great sports year in Volusia County. In April and May alone, the Sports Commission will host five events in our community, including the Atlantic Sun Women's Golf Championship and the A-Sun Men's and Women's Tennis Championships. The Daytona Beach CVB is sponsoring the the Let It Fly Flag Football World Championships on Memorial Day weekend. The fall is highlighted by the Daytona Beach Half Marathon, which will take place this year on Halloween morning.

We hope everyone is off to a great start in 2010. As always, it will be a fast start, as our community prepares for Speedweeks. Good luck to our friends at Daytona International Speedway.

Thank you again for your support of the Central Florida Sports Commission. Happy New Year!

Best Regards,
Sam Stark

IN THE PIPELINEPipeline
At the close of 2009, your Sports Commission was in discussions with numerous event owners regarding potential events for Volusia County. USA Volleyball, Florida Region is interested in hosting a tri-surface (grass, beach, hardcourt) volleyball championship for nearly 400 athletes in Daytona Beach in the summer or fall of 2010. The CFSC, Daytona Beach Area CVB and the Ocean Center are exploring possible dates with USAV. At the close of the year, we were also examining the possibility of attracting a 2013 United States Trampoline and Tumbling National Championship to the Ocean Center in 2013 (2,000 athletes). USA Taekwondo officials are planning a site visit to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University sometime in January or February as they review the Sports Commission's recent proposal to host a National Qualifier in May of 2010.

Also, as of the turn of the year, the Sports Commission, CVB and the Ocean Center were putting the finishing touches on a bid that will hopefully attract a US Fencing Junior Championship to Daytona Beach in November of 2010 (approximately 2,000 room nights).

The Sports Commission learned in November that we were not awarded the right to host a 2010 Rock n Roll Series Half Marathon (Daytona Beach), 2010 USASA Region III National Cup Soccer Tournament (Ormond Beach) and the 2010 NIRSA NCCS National Soccer Tournament (Deltona).  The two soccer event opportunities were awarded to other sites around the United States. The Rock 'N Roll Series countered our proposal with a plan that greatly exceeded the resources our community is able to responsibly provide.  Several proposals are still under review at this time, include the 2011 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Regional and the 2011 & 2012 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship.
