Made in the USA Qatar 2010

The State of Delaware Office of International Trade and Development is inviting Delaware companies to participate in the Made in the USA - Qatar trade show in Doha, Qatar October 12 - 15, 2010.  This show will enable you to showcase your latest ideas, and highlight your products, in the fastest growing region for American Products.  As Qatar continues on its path to economic growth and development, there is abundant potential for US product and services to the market and seize first mover advantage.  Made in the USA - Qatar 2010 will provide an important venue for promoting US product and services in Qatar by providing New-to-Export and New-to-Market US companies the ideal platform to develop new partnerships and relationships in Qatar and the region.  The show will bring together and highlight over 21 fast growing sectors and services under one roof and introduce them to these fast growing markets.

Why Qatar?
Qatar's real GDP growth is strong, at approximately 8 % in 2007, and a predicted 9.5% in 2008. As more Liquefied Natural Gas facilities come on-line in 2009, real GDP growth should be above 12%. Qatar's gross domestic product (GDP) rose to a record high of $61.7 billion in 2007, up from $9 billion from the previous year. In the next ten years, Qatar will invest over $120 billion dollars in the development of the energy and industrial sectors, and $60 billion in roads, infrastructure development, housing and real estate, health/medical and sanitation projects. Per capita income in Qatar is high, at over $60,000 in 2007. There is no personal income tax in Qatar. Quite simply, Qatar's economy is booming.

US Trade & Investment Mission to Algeria
September 25- September 30, 2010

The 2010 US Trade & Investment Mission to Algeria is the third annual trade mission organized by the US-Algeria Business Council and the Embassy of Algeria, in Washington, DC.  The Honorable Abdallah Baali, Ambassador of Algeria to the United States, remains a key supporter of these trade missions and his ongoing support and leadership have secured numerous high-level meetings for the US delegates participating in the trade missions. The Embassy of Algeria in Washington, DC, under the Ambassador's leadership, plays a key role in the organization of these trade missions.

Why Algeria?
Algeria has strengthened its reputation as a global market player with a responsible fiscal policy and continues to look overseas to attract more investors. Algeria is the industrial powerhouse of North Africa, the second largest country in Africa and one of the richest in terms of natural resources.  With an economy dominated by the hydrocarbons sector, it has benefited from a recent boom in the world energy market.  Algeria is running a substantial trade surplus and building up foreign exchange reserves. In addition to its booming energy sector, other high-performing industries include agriculture, construction, mining, food processing, and light manufacturing.

IMPACT ANALYSIS
Issues Impacting Global Business
July-August 2010 Issue

New economic realities-more sophisticated supply chains, co-production practices and shifting trade patterns-have replaced the paradigm of trade in goods to trade in tasks. Unfortunately, the benefits are not always revealed in conventional trade statistics. What is captured distorts trade, generates poor policies and creates tensions (p1-2).

The American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act will hurt American workers, reduce American exports, and make American companies less competitive in the international marketplace (p3-4).

Mergers and acquisitions have been a quick and easy way for multinationals to enter the Chinese market-until now. Such deals are declining for Western firms as Chinese companies grow more competitive in the M&A arena (p5-7).

Through collective intelligence, collaborative innovation and cross-pollination, our members will grow and network their businesses. However, community will always remain paramount to both collaboration and innovation. In their opinion, a community can either encourage the intuitive mind to ponder the viability of the impossible or enslave it to normalcy. They've set out to achieve the impossible.

LAST WEEK'S TRIVIA QUESTION

Globally, child labor rates have fallen by how much in the past decade?

A.  10 million
B.  15 million
C.  30 million
D.  40 million

Answer :  C. 30 million

Over the last decade, the International Labor Organization's report estimates that child labor among 5-14 year olds has dropped from 186 million in 2000 to 153 million in 2008.  The ILO's most recent study of child labor around the world - out in May, third in a decade-long series - offers three perspectives:

By industry: Most child labor is in agriculture. Press reporting usually focuses on child labor in factories and can therefore mislead: in fact, about 60 percent of child workers -- about 90 million of the 153 million child laborers under 15 -- are in agriculture. Another 26 percent, or 38 million, are in low-level service jobs such as maid work, dishwashing in restaurants, package delivery and so on. About 7 percent of the world's child laborers, or about 10 million boys and girls, work in "industry," which includes not only factories but quarries, construction sites and businesses producing for local markets. The ILO accordingly observes that "the effective abolition of child labor requires a breakthrough in agriculture, where most child labourers work."

By sex: More boys than girls work. The ILO counts 128 million boys aged 5-17 in child labor in 2008, alongside 88 million girls. Trends over time also show girls' work diminishing, and boys' work stable or even slightly up. Between 2004 and 2008, the number of 5-17 year old girls in child labor fell from 103 million to 87 million, and employment of girls in hazardous work fell from 54 million to 41 million. By contrast, the number of working boys rose by about 8 million. Boys' work is concentrated in agriculture; girls more often work in services.

By region: Child labor rates are highest in rural areas and least-developed regions. Thus by region, rates are highest in Africa. The ILO believes 65 million African children aged 5-14 -- a quarter of the continent's young people -- are child laborers. Latin America's child labor rate is 10 percent, and Asia's 13 percent. The report oddly lumps together the Middle East, rich countries and low-income Europe in an "other" category, and estimates child labor rates for these combined regions at 6.7%.

Perhaps most striking, though, is the ILO report's finding of steady decline over time in child labor among younger children and in hazardous work. Over the last decade, the ILO's report estimates that the number of 5-14 year old children in hazardous work fell by more than half, from 111 million to 53 million. (Brazil in particular gets applause for effective policy and for international activism.) And so a remarkable, and remarkably quiet, story of social progress continues. As the ILO insists, though, it isn't all good news: the report also finds that between 2004 and 2008, child labor rates rose among 15-17 year olds from 59 million to 62 million, and also up among boys and in sub-Saharan Africa. More to do.
