Issues Impacting Global Business
November-December 2009 Issue
As the deepest and longest recession since the Great
Depression recedes, it's becoming increasingly important to establish
global competitive advantages through greater economic integration with other
nations. Together, Canada
and the United States
can and should seize the moment-but various issues stand in the way
(p1-2).
China's
GDP is accelerating-and it's not due to its export business. China's
increasing domestic demand appears to be sustainable and a major contributor to
growth (p3-5).
Misinformation continues to distort facts about international trade and related
issues. For example, prior to the recession, the American manufacturing sector
was growing stronger-not weaker (p6-7).

FOREIGN POLICY NEWS Trade Reform Bill to be Reintroduced in Senate
Senators. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, announced this
week that they plan to reintroduce the Trade Reform, Accountability,
Development and Employment (TRADE) Act. The Senate bill is similar but
not identical to a bill that was introduced in the House earlier this year and currently has more than 125 co-sponsors.
A
joint press release blamed "trade related issues" for the loss of
198,258 jobs in the U.S. this year. While the bill's supporters "want
trade and we want more of it," Brown said, U.S. trade policy needs "a
new direction" if it is to "foster new business and job growth at home"
and "lift up workers in developing nations." Full Article

LAST WEEKS TRIVIA QUESTION
Which of the following countries was the first foreign country to have coins minted in the United States?
 A) Great Britain C) Mexico B) Venezuela D) China
Correct Answer: B) Venezuela
Congratulations to Carl Hutter for being the first to correctly answer the trivia question! Mr. Hutter received a WTC umbrella for his correct response.
By an act of Congress on January 29, 1874 the mint was
given explicit authority to produce coinage for foreign countries. It
further stated, "apprporiate charges could be
fixed by the director of the Mint, with the approval of the secretary
of of the Treasury and according to such regulations as the secretary
might prescribe."
Venezuela was the first foreign
country to do so (1875 and 1876). A total mintage during those two
years resulted in 10,000,000 one-centavo coins and 2,000,000 2.5
centavos coins being struck.
From 1875 to 1984 the United States minted more than 11.3 billion coins for more than 40 foreign entities
