IMPACT ANALYSIS
Issues Impacting Global Business
November-December 2009 Issue

As the deepest and longest recession since the Great Depression recedes, it's becoming increasingly important to establish global competitive advantages through greater economic integration with other nations. Together, Canada and the United States can and should seize the moment-but various issues stand in the way (p1-2).

China's GDP is accelerating-and it's not due to its export business. China's increasing domestic demand appears to be sustainable and a major contributor to growth (p3-5).

Misinformation continues to distort facts about international trade and related issues. For example, prior to the recession, the American manufacturing sector was growing stronger-not weaker (p6-7).

The WTCA reinforces this policy by the issuance of a global WTCA membership card. Upon joining or renewing membership annually to the World Trade Center Delaware, members receive a WTCA Card enabling access to this reciprocity. Your WTCA Card and WTCA.org link all other WTCA members for support in providing services to their local members. No other organization in the world, which is devoted to international trade, can offer businesses a home base in more than 300 cities located in 92 countries. Currently there are 326 licensed WTCs globally, including some licenses in the process of development/establishment.

    WTCA Reciprocity includes:
    • Group Trade Missions, with the cooperation of other WTCs, include such services as: locating partners, agents/distributors, setting up business meetings, government meetings, protocol, meeting the visiting delegation at the airport, helping with hotel discounts, etc.
    • Matchmaking - WTCs use each other to sell their clients' products and services. They match visitors from other WTCs with their own membership.
    • Posting trade opportunities on individual web sites and publicizing them in local papers.
    • Hosting exchanges of students, business visitors, etc.

    LAST WEEK'S TRIVIA QUESTION

In 1964, a capsized freighter was refloated in Kuwait by filling its hull with polystyrene balls.  Where did this idea originate? Orange Header

    A) A Cold War Scientist                   C) A science experiment the Captain performed in school

    B) Donald Duck comic                     D) The Captains' wife

    Answer: B) Donald Duck comic

This idea originated from a 1949 Donald Duck comic, in which Donald and his nephews raised a yacht using ping pong balls. Danish inventor Karl Krøyer came up with this method to raise the sunken Al Kuwait by filling it with buoyant bodies fed through a tube. On December 31, 1964, he filled the ship with 27 million plastic balls made of expandable polystyrene foam and weighing 65 tons. The balls had been airlifted from Berlin to Kuwait.
