IMPACT ANALYSIS
Issues Impacting Global Business
September - October 2009 Issue
The recently held North American Leaders Summit with President Obama, Canadian Prime Minister Harper and Mexican President Calderon failed to enhance regional competitiveness. Few vital issues were discussed, while disputes continue to cause friction (p1-2).
The BRICS-Brazil, Russia, India and China-wish to exert greater unified influence. But can they? More divides than binds them (p3).
Chinese companies are racing up the technology ladder and threatening many North American industries in the process. Read what you can do (p4-6).
U.S. trade policy is unclear and the ambiguous signals are confusing. This needs to change (p7-8).

COLOMBIA AND KOREA FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS
Colombia
The United States Trade Representative (USTR) is conducting a review of labor-related issues in the context of the free trade agreement (FTA) between the United States and Colombia. As part of that review, the interagency Trade Policy Staff Committee (TPSC) seeks comment from the public to assist the USTR in working with the Colombian government to secure continued progress in ensuring that Colombia's workers can fully exercise their fundamental labor rights. The public is also invited to comment on other issues they believe relevant to the FTA, including the potential benefits of the agreement.

LAST WEEK'S TRIVIA QUESTION
How did Malaya, the former name of Malaysia, gain independence from the British in 1957?
A) Local democratic elections and B) Revolutionary war of independence eventual independence C) Communist uprising and violence D) By a United Nations resolution
Answer: C) Communist uprising and violence
In 1948, the Federation of Malaya, the former name of Malaysia, was formed. It restored the autonomy of the rulers of the Malay states but still held them under British protection. Rebels lead by the Malayan Communist Party launched guerrilla operations designed to force the British out of Malaya. The Malayan Emergency, as it was known, lasted from 1948 to 1960, and involved a long anti-insurgency campaign by British Commonwealth troops in Malaya. Against the backdrop of the Cold War, independence for the Federation of Malaya was granted on August 31, 1957. Malaysia was later formed in 1963.
