IMPACT ANALYSIS

Issues Impacting Global Business

July - August 2009

Is the Margaret Thatcher-Ronald Reagan economic model of free market capitalism dead? Once the post-global recessionary dust settles, companies, as well as countries, will need to prepare for what lies ahead (p1-3).

As President Obama seeks to boost the U.S. economy and build stronger ties with our friends abroad, he could advance both goals at once by urging Congress to pass the pending U.S.-Colombia FTA (p4).

Small business is the backbone of the U.S. economy and key to our economic recovery. Adjustments of various export promotion programs will help small business have an even larger impact (p5-6).

The global economic crisis has not ruined the appetite for Chinese mergers and acquisitions. Companies are looking to their China operations to offset losses in other markets (p7-8).

    LAST WEEK'S TRIVIA QUESTION

Who was the longest standing Arab ruler through 1995?

    A) King Hussein of Jordan            B) Saddam Hussein
    C) Saudi Arabia's King Fahd         D) The Emir of Kuwait, Jaber Al-Ahmed Al- Sabah

Answer: A) King Hussein of Jordan

Hussein bin Talal. (November 14, 1935 - February 7, 1999) was the King of Jordan from the abdication of his father, King Talal, in 1952, until his death. Hussein guided his country in the context of the Cold War, and through four decades of Arab-Israeli conflict, balancing the pressures of Arab nationalism, the burdens of sheltering a large Palestinian refugee population, and the allure of Western-style development against the stark reality of Jordan's geographic location.
